INTRODUCTION
Attention, ladies and gentlemen: I regret to inform you that the departure of flight 37 to San Francisco will be delayed due to mechanical problems. The new scheduled departure is two hours from now.
Aargh.
My first impulse was to head for the agents desk to see if I could get my first-class upgrade request approved for the delayed flight. Maybe if I got in the agents face, I could force it through.
By the time I reached the desk, however, a long line had formed; lots of other passengers had the same idea. I took my place in line and tried to estimate how long my wait would be. Hmm. Could be as much as an hour. A positive response was dubious. Do I really want to spend one of the two hours waiting in line for a probable no?
I remembered the lesson my seminar students report as being their all-time favorite: Let it be easy. Struggle is not required. If I were willing to let it be easy here and now, what would I do? The answer was obvious: I would head for the executive lounge and relax. If I got the upgrade, great. If not, okay. At least I would have spent one more hour of my life in peace.
I swerved out of line and headed for the lounge. I found a cushy chair, put my feet up, sipped some orange juice, read a magazine, and took a nap. Good call.
Fifteen minutes before the new departure, I made my way back to the gate to board. As I entered the departure area, I heard another announcement on the PA system: Mr. Cohen, Mr. Alan Cohen, please come to the counter.
Now what? I approached the counter. Nearly everyone had boarded, so the coast was perfectly clear. When I identified myself, the agent cheerfully informed me, Your upgrade came through.
Well, that was good newsand I didnt even have to stand there for an hour and go into my New Jersey act!
This is really strange, the agent commented with a puzzled look. I have no idea where this open seat came from. It wasnt here a minute ago.
Now were talking. Tickled at the double pleasure of the hour of relaxation and the upgrade, I accepted my new boarding pass and gleefully moved toward the gate.
Along the way I realized that the agent hadnt collected the coupon payments due for the upgrade. Another hmm. Integrity. I returned to the desk and placed three coupons on the counter. I think you forgot to collect these, I told the agent. She studied the computer another moment and came back, Nope, the computer here says the seat is paid for, and thats good enough for me.
Now were really talking. Well, if its good enough for you, its good enough for me, I replied.
As I settled into my wide seat on the plane, I considered what had just happenednothing short of a miracle. A magnificent demonstration of a principle I hold dear, which the universe was confirming to me firsthand, undeniably: Relax, trust, and choose ease over struggle, and things will work out better than if you try to manipulate anxiously. How much clearer could it get?
If you, like me, have been taught that the only way to get what you want is through combat, or to trudge through life playing catch-up ball, the book you are holding will assist you in making the crucial shift from an uphill-battle mentality to the deep knowing that you can have what you want without sacrificing your soul in the process. Success, wealth, and harmonious business relationships can be a lot easier than you have been taught, and here you will find many examples of how good it can get, along with practical tools to draw such experiences into your own life.
The stories and examples you read are the result of many years experience experimenting with these principles in my own life, and seeing them demonstrated in the lives of thousands of seminar participants and coaching clients. They really work and they will work for you if you apply them.
Our journey will be illuminated by nine keystone principles, each introduced at the beginning of a section containing several chapters that illustrate it. Each key is accompanied by a shorthand memory-hook version of the principle for easy reference when you need it. At the end of the text you will find a summary of all nine keys, which I suggest you post on your desk, mirror, or somewhere that will remind you at just the right moment. If one or more of the principles speaks to you personally and directly, you might like to print out a larger version of it and post it on your computer monitor or dashboard. The more you remember and apply, the more rapid and powerful will be your results.
