TO THE READER
Dear Reader,
Embrace this Catechism lovingly and with care. In it, you are going to learn about, or recall, the most important things in life, those things which are the delights of the saints and are sweet as honey for the wise.
Is there anything more important than God and the things of God? By no means. And so, you are going to learn to know, to love and to serve God. This is something greater than going to some faraway planet on a spaceship, or reaching the depths of the sea in a submarine, or traveling the length and breadth of the entire world. In this Catechism, you are going to have the power to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length, and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge (Eph 3:18-19).
Since God is so great and we are so small, we must always ask him, with great humility, to give light to our intellect, ardor to our hearts, and generosity to our wills, so that, in this Catechism and throughout our entire lives, we can know him better, love him more each day, and serve him as only he deserves.

THE FOUR PARTS OF CATHOLIC DOCTRINE
All God taughtthat is, all Catholic doctrine contained in Tradition, Scripture, and taught by the Holy Father and the bishops in union with himis a treasure so beautiful that if a person finds it, he will sell all that he has (Mt 13:44) and buy it, that is, be prepared for the greatest sacrifices in order to possess it.
In the Catechism you are going to find this treasure and, in order to make it yours (or to possess it), you will have to make some kind of sacrifice. For example, you will have to study the lessons, memorize some things, etc.; but, this sacrifice is well worth it because what you are going to receive is worth much more.
This beautiful and rich treasure includes four parts:
1. WHAT ONE HAS TO BELIEVE OR THE PROFESSION OF FAITH;
2. WHAT ONE HAS TO RECEIVE OR THE CELEBRATION OF THE CHRISTIAN MYSTERY;
3. WHAT ONE HAS TO DO OR THE LIFE IN CHRIST;
4. WHAT ONE HAS TO PRAY OR CHRISTIAN PRAYER.
1. WHAT WE MUST BELIEVE
All we must believe is summarized in a profession of faith, which is called the Creed or Article of Faith.
Among all the creeds, two occupy a special place in the Churchs life:
-The Apostles Creed is so called because it is rightly considered to be a faithful summary of the apostles faith.
-The Nicene-Constantinopolitan or Nicene Creed draws its great authority from the fact that it stems from the first two ecumenical Councils (in 325 and 381).
THE APOSTLES CREED | THE NICENE CREED |
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. | I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. |
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. | I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father. Through him all hings were made. For us men and for our salvation, he came down from heaven: |
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. | by the power of the Holy Spirit he was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. |
He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. | For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered, died, and was buried. |
He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. | On the third day he rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures; |
He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. | he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. |
He will come again to judge the living and the dead. | He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. |
I believe in the Holy Spirit, | I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. |
the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, | I believe in one holy catholic, and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. |
the resurrection of the body, | I look for the resurrection of the dead, |
and the life everlasting. | and the life of the world to come. |
Amen. | Amen. |
2. WHAT WE MUST RECEIVE
