Theres nothing on earth Id rather do than evangelize. God, in His gracious kindness, has allowed me to present the gospel to hundreds of thousands over the last forty-plus years.
As I have done so, under Gods guidance, Ive learned tips through Scripture and experience. I can sincerely say that God has used them to make me a more effective evangelist. Along the way, Ive often thought, Wow! I wish I wouldve learned that sooner. But God knows what He is doing and in His own time, He has enabled me to learn and grow.
I hope as I share these tips with you your love for unbelievers is enhanced and your desire to reach them increases. If that happens, this book will be worth all the time and effort. Most of all, thank you for cultivating a heart for the people who need to hear the greatest message of all: Christ died for your sins and rose from the dead.

Tip #1
Evangelism always starts with obedience.
First Things First
Trite, isnt it? How many times have you heard the phrase used? It may refer to items for an agenda or activities for the weekend. It may be used for the five-year plan we have for our vocation or the five-day plan we have for our vacation. First thingsfirst.
Nowhere is that more true than the area of evangelism. Without the right starting point, we let fears and insecurities keep us from fulfilling the Great Commission (Matthew 28:1920). How many times have you heard the following remarks in evangelism or used them yourself?
- I wish I knew how to turn a conversation to spiritual things. That would help me so much in evangelism.
- Im so afraid. If I could deal with rejection, Id evangelize more.
- Once I learn how to answer questions and objections I know I will be more consistent in evangelism.
- Im going to study what the New Testament says about evangelism. I think that will increase my concern for the lost.
- I am going to spend more time in prayer before evangelizing. I think that will help me a lot.
All of those are appropriate. Learning how to turn conversations to spiritual things is a good skill to develop. Overcoming fear instead of letting it overcome you will make a difference in evangelism. Learning how to answer questions and objections will make you more confident in talking to the lost. Every believer is helped by knowing what the New Testament says, but that should never be a block to evangelizing. Prayer is an essential part of effective evangelism, but even prayer needs to be followed by obedience.
None of these, though, is the starting point. The starting point is obedience. After all, that is where Christ started with the disciples. In Luke 5, after a fruitless night of fishing, He said to them, Launch out in the deep and let down your nets for a catch (v. 4). Peter responded, Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net. Even though an entire night had not produced one fish, they were resolved they would do what Jesus said. After taking in a net-breaking, boat-sinking load, Christ drove his lesson home. He said, Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men (v. 10). He wanted to teach them to do what he said when he said to do it no matter how crazy it seemed. Everything starts not with knowing how or training, but with obedience.
Do everything you can to learn and grow in evangelism, but be careful to put first things firstobedience.
Tip #2
The biblical message is what matters most in evangelism.
What Is Your Message?
Two of my professors in seminary impacted my life by both saying the same thing. They used different words of course, but the message was the same. Ive never forgotten what they said: You always have to ask, If you were the devil, how would you do it?
Satan is having a heyday in the church. Hes distracting churches from examining the message with questions about methods. Churches are asking, How do we reach the people of todays generation? One church uses movie theater clips to grab peoples attention. Another emphasizes a quiet and reverent atmosphere of a more traditional style. Still another stresses the creative use of modern technology. While none of these approaches are wrong in themselves, our first and foremost concern is our message for unbelievers. If the message isnt right, the methods dont matter. They may be attractive in drawing people to church, but if the message isnt correct, people will not come to God.
In their good intentions to reach unbelievers, some churches try to make Christianity look attractive by presenting a wrong focus and false expectations of what it means to become a Christian. Come to Christ. Hell change your marriage. With Him, you can experience prosperity, not poverty. Tired and lonely? Hell change all of that! Tired of being selfish? Come to Christ. Hell make you selfless.
Unfortunately, that is not the message. Paul the apostle said in 2 Corinthians 5:20, Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christs behalf, be reconciled to God. If Christ were to walk the surface of the earth today, His message would be reconciliation. Reconciliation should then be the focus of our message, too. God has taken those who are His enemies and made it possible for us to be His friends. The message we have for the lost is that we are all sinners, Christ died as our substitute and rose again, and through personal trust in Him alone, we can enjoy His free gift of eternal life. God has compassion on all of our hurts and will eventually heal us, if not now, then when Christ returns, but loneliness or broken marriages are not the issue at the heart of the gospel. It is our eternal destiny.
If people dont understand that message, methods dont matter. Methods may bring people to church, but only the message brings them to God. Start with the question, What are we telling the lost? If the message isnt right, whatever means of communication we are using wont help.
Tip #3
Whether or not you have the gift of evangelism is not the issue.
All Responsible, Some Gifted
When confronted with an opportunity to evangelize, some believers protest, But I dont have the gift of evangelism. Because they dont have the spiritual gift of evangelism, they push off the expectation of evangelism. They dont speak to unbelievers about Christ. Their misunderstanding of spiritual gifts in comparison to Christian responsibility becomes their excuse.
