THE POWER OF SEEING THE IMPOSSIBLE
On July 26, 1852, British sprinter Charles Westhall accomplished something that was thought to be impossible at the time. Running in a torrential downpour on a racetrack in London, Westhall set the official time for running one mile at a stunning 4 minutes and 28 seconds. And although his record would be broken 31 more times in the late 1800s and early 1900s, each new record was only slightly better than the original time. All fell short of breaking the elusive four-minute mark for running a mile. For over 100 years, it was thoughtit was believed and acceptedthat four minutes is the limit to how fast a human can run a mile. It was known that our bones and muscles are simply not built to carry our bodies any faster. That is, until the impossible happened on May 6, 1954.
On that day, for the first time in history, British runner Roger Bannister broke the impossible four-minute barrier for running a mile. Bannister clocked his paradigm-shattering run at a blazing 3 minutes and 59.4 seconds. And this is where the story of the four-minute mile illustrates the theme of this book.
