    PREFACE

Multitudes of people in this world are unaware that they are suffering from their own love of unhappiness. The influence of one impetus or another pulls them headlong into their personal patterns of self-defeat because of this subconscious attraction to unhappiness. They are suffering from a condition that I call the unhappiness syndrome.

To end your relationship with unhappiness, above all other things you do, you will need to find the specific patterns that are defeating you. Only then will you open your path to freedom.

It is for this reason that I have written this book as a guidebook that walks you through the wide range of self-destructive patterns and offers my prescriptions for each of them. All accomplishments begin with knowledge, and I sincerely pray that the knowledge in this book will be the beginning of many happier lives throughout the world.

Recognizing the Unhappiness Syndrome Within You

We human beings have been granted full control over one important thing: our mind. We have no control over other peoples thoughts. But our mind is the one realm where we stand wholly sovereign.

The secret to mastering life, therefore, is mastering ones mind. But the prevalence of negative thinking in the world is a telling indication that people are struggling to make use of this gift and, as a result, are suffering from the effects of a dismal outlook on life. We can find these people all around ussitting in coffee shops, walking down sidewalks, browsing boutiques, working at their desks, waiting for the bus, and riding the train. I wish I could go up to everyone, point out their negative mindset, and explain how that mindset will lead to unhappy outcomes.

It perturbs me that people allow negative thinking to pervade their mind even though they hold the power to change it. This stems from the fact that their minds have become habituated to these thought patterns, which exert a constant magnetic attraction to additional pessimistic circumstances.

An example of one way people typically react to other peoples remarks offers a good illustration of the effects of negative thinking. As I have explained, the negative thinkers mind has fallen into a pattern of pessimism that leads to unhappiness. This means that when he hears a remark about himself, even if no malice was intended, it can set off a negative reaction of hurt. His own mind will decide to attach a negative connotation to the words and allow him to hold onto this response for many years.
