Preface
The aims of this book
Curiously enough, one cannot read a book: one can only re-read it.
A good reader, a major reader, an active and creative reader is a re-reader.
Lectures on Literature (1980)
Vladimir Nabokov, 18991977, Russian novelist
As the main title suggests, the overall aim of this book is to create success your success in achieving a business degree. The content of this book is equally applicable whether you are studying in Budapest, Hong Kong, Karachi, Melbourne, Oxford, Pune or Singapore. This book is aimed at an international audience and it is applicable to foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate students. Moreover, you may be studying at a private college (working in collaboration with a degree-awarding organization), a private or state/government accredited university.
Effective studying is assisted by a strong sense of purpose, knowing what you hope to achieve and why you hope to achieve it. In order to succeed in your objectives, you need to become an active participant within the learning process.
This book interweaves both the study and reality of business. The idea is that you start preparing yourself for a business world while you are at college and university. As you read through this book, you will see direct comparisons with real business. If you really want to succeed within the highly competitive business world, then you need to think business (and everything that entails) from Day 1 of your studies.
What this book is and is not
Unless you consider specific literary classics by such renowned and gifted authors as Dickens, Kafka and Tolstoy, there is, perhaps, no such thing as a perfect book. It is always a difficulty for an author to know what to include and what to exclude. My aim was to create an accessible and useful text of approximately 70,000 words. Moreover, I know how expensive academic books can be and thus wanted a text that would command an affordable price.
