This true story tells firsthand the intense, traumatic battles these warriors fought and won, sharing lessons learned from their incredible backgrounds. A cadre of scientists further break down each experience, translating them into digestible and relatable action items, allowing the reader to apply these lessons forged under fire to their own lives.

Read Medal of Honor recipient Leroy Petrys true account of grabbing an enemy grenade in Afghanistan, saving the lives of his fellow soldiers but losing his hand in the process. Hear what fellow Medal of Honor recipient Florent Groberg was thinking as he tackled a suicide bomber. Feel what Marine Joey Jones felt as he was flying through the air, weightless, after stepping on the IED that would take both his legs. And most importantly, experience what Jason learned about leadership and embracing discomfort from adversity.

TABLE OF CONTENTS
NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR
This book is about getting comfortable being uncomfortable. When you make the courageous decision to deliberately choose discomfort, you prove to yourself that you are no longer satisfied with the way things are and you wont tolerate it any longer. Youre ready for change, for growth. You are ready to accept and embrace suffering because you want a better life for yourself, your family, and/or your business.
Whats stopping you? Fear. Fear kills more dreams than failure ever will.
What are you afraid of, then? Youve heard of fear of the unknown, but thats not entirely accurate. Fear is the unknown. Youre only afraid of what you dont know. What you dont see or understand. Once you truly know something, youre no longer afraid of it. Its not the obstacle you fear; its the unknown result of attempting to overcome that obstacle. You must have the courage to willingly choose to confront that unknown, whatever it may be, head on.
Speaking in public, playing in the big game, and starting a business are all challenges with unknown results. You dont fear the activities themselves. Its the ambiguity of what happens next that keeps you up at night.
Your unknown could be taking a sales position at a start-up company. You arent afraid of taking the job or even doing the job. Youre afraid of the unknown that comes with leaving the stability of a safe company with a regular salary and 401(k) for the uncertainty of a start-up. The comfortable thing to do would be to stay where you are and cash the paycheck. But with the proper tools, you can learn to embrace the discomfort and succeed in the unknown.
You must deliberately choose to place yourself in the uncomfortable position of facing your fears. Deliberate Discomfort is how strong people are made. Unfortunately, that is not what society is teaching right now. Society is cultivating indignation and victimhood. We are encouraged to place ourselves in an environment where we will not be exposed to criticism, opposing opinions, or emotional harm.
Its detrimental to progress. Thats not how we learn and grow. We learn by voluntarily choosing to face our fears, not by avoiding them. Our willingness to confront fear is more powerful than fear itself. You dont grow by hiding or avoiding. You grow by being bold, confronting, and overcoming.
By implementing this Deliberate Discomfort mind-set, you will find that your life will change in a profoundly positive way. Instead of questioning why bad things seem to happen to you, you will look at them as blessings. Instead of moaning about the pain you are enduring, youll recognize and appreciate it as a strength builder. Youll appreciate these events as opportunities to grow, improve, and become the best you can be. Youll laugh at how hysterically uncomfortable an experience was rather than complaining and feeling sorry for yourself. Those embarrassing moments? Your regrets? You will look at them as nothing more than learning experiences. You cant truly win until you learn how to lose.
This book will serve as your roadmap to getting what you want in life by deliberately, carefully, and methodically choosing to be uncomfortable.
Your humble servant,
Jason B. A. Van Camp
Major (Ret.), US Army Special Forces
INTRODUCTION
During my military career, I served with some incredibly powerful and inspirational leaders. After my service, I asked them to join me in creating a company, which we call Mission Six Zero. Here is the genesis of that name:
Mission: A clearly defined statement that aligns individuals and/or teams with a sense of purpose, direction, and motivation toward common goals. We believe in Mission First, People Always. While the mission always comes first, investing in people is at the core of accomplishing the teams mission.
Six: The term Got your 6 references the face of a clock, where the number 12 is to your front and the number 6 is at the rear. In combat, the rear-facing direction is often the most vulnerable, and saying you have someones six means you have their back no matter what. This term has come to define the vital trust, loyalty, respect, and commitment that all teammates expect of one another on a mission. Six is also the numerical call sign or designator for the unit leader or commander.
Zero: True north on a magnetic compass. Zero represents a baseline, or a means of measuring progress during a mission. In the whole person concept, zero symbolizes balance and striving for equilibrium in all facets of life.
M60: In short, its the weapon that Green Beret John Rambo is famous for.
Mission Six Zero was built by high performers determined to empower our clients to live life to its fullest. We identify, assess, and develop human behaviors to help our corporate and professional sports clients achieve optimal performance results. This book is a blueprint for how we do that.
