Chapter One: What Is Stoicism
I n this chapter, you are going to learn what Stoicism is and where it originates.
In recent years, interest in the ancient philosophy of Stoicism has experienced a renaissance. Despite the growing popularity of this older philosophy, there are still so many misconceptions about it. For instance, many people believe that Stoicism is about being devoid of any emotion, including happiness. Others think that to be a stoic, you need to lead a Spartan and bland lifestyle. To set the records straight, lets take a look at what Stoicism really is.
S toicism is a philosophy that helps us maintain control over our thoughts and actions in a world full of chaos and unpredictability. Stoicism understands that we have no control over external occurrences, and therefore we should not rely on them. Instead, we should rely on our mind, behavior, and reaction to external events, all of which we can control. Stoicism teaches us that what matters is not what happens to us, but rather, how we react to it. In a world of chaos, Stoicism teaches us how to remain steadfast, strong and in control of ourselves.
