T HE SUN WAS powerful that day. It burned down on my skin, and even the humid windseemed angry. There was such an eerie silence and stillness as if no one else existedand I was on another planet. Everything around me was blurry and dark... exceptfor the scene that lay directly before me.
I looked up to see a man hanging on a cross. His breath was shallow and forced. Hisdark hair, matted with blood and sweat, was framed by a grey crown of thorns, whichcontinued to pierce and bleed Him. His face, so beaten and bruised, was unrecognizable. His entire body was covered with an unseemly mixture of dirt, sweat, and blood. Hewas wholly swollen, despite the look of malnourishment in his thin torso. His wearybody was completely still except for the tortured breath whispering from His frame. His head hung low in surrendered exhaustion.
I heard from somewhere in the distance a cruel laughter. They were ridiculing andmocking Him. Spitting in His face, pushing Him down, and kicking Him. They calledHim inadequate. They called Him a liar. They said He was powerless and weak. I sawall of this treachery and accusation hanging on His worn body.
Then I looked and was startled to see that I could see through His skin, into thevery depths of His body. There was cancer growing everywhere. There was diabetes. Heart disease. Leprosy. Disorders of every kind. Every disease and sickness knownto man was rapidly invading His body. Mental illness of every kind, in its infancy, was poisoning His brain.
This innocent man, bleeding, suffering, and dying, was hated and reviled more thanany other man who had ever lived. Suddenly, I saw grotesque demons floating aroundthe perimeter of the Cross, making certain to keep a good distance away. They cursedand vomited and spewed their hatred. They taunted the man on the Cross and jeered,Wheres Your Father now? Their shrill laughter sent chills down my spine, and Ifelt as if I would faint or weep or both.
Then it happened. He looked at me. His beautiful eyes were covered with His own blood, but His gaze burned right through me. He was undeniable... unmistakable. Thiswas my Savior.
I felt the cold grass between my wriggling toes as I began to tremble and weep, uncontrollably. My face felt hot and my body weak as tears streamed rivers down my cheeks. I fellto my knees, face in the dirt. The ground was dusty and gritty as it cradled my writhingbody. The earth watched silently as I became broken, muddled, helpless, needy, anddesperate.
Then, just as abruptly as it had begun, my sobbing ceased, and I looked up just intime to see something coming out of my body... or rather someone. It was the mirrorimage of me, but rather transparent and ghostly. Raggedy clothing hung from the unkemptfigure, and a stench permeated the air. This apparition floated out of my body anddrifted up higher and higher until it finally latched onto and into the very bodyof Jesus! This other person fit neatly into His body like a set of nesting dolls.I could see both the body of Christ and my old self-person at the same timebothnailed to the Cross, both dying, Him in my old body and my old self in Him.
I watched and saw that my old person was so wretched and full of sinyet Jesus, soregal and perfect, didnt reject my sinful self. He didnt object or turn away. Hedidnt rebuke me or send me packing. There was not a look of scorn on His humbleface. Rather, He patiently endured, even welcomed, my sinful self. My old sin naturelooked confused as it tried to escape the nails of the Cross, but it was powerlessagainst the will of the Father.
My old sinful person melded into His body, and I saw that my sin wasnt just on Him,in Him... it was Him. He became my sin. Willingly. Theres no greater love.
Suddenly, the sky became terribly dark. A desperate loneliness, so full of agonyand heartache, fell on Jesus like a thick blanket. I saw golden tears wash pathsdown His blood-stained cheeks, as His body wilted and trembled a tortured moan. Hemustered one last bit of dying strength and screamed a pitiful scream into the heavens,Father! Father! Why have You forsaken Me?
The whole earth held its breath, straining to catch the reply. Silence. Utter anddeafening silence. The whole sky screamed of inky, dark forsakenness.
And so, Jesus the Messiah, laden down with the sins and treachery of the corruptedworld, was left alone.
Such a tension has never before existed. The fate of the entire universe was restingon the culmination of this very moment. And as the last drops of His holy blood reachedthe mercy seat, the Lamb breathed His last as He whispered, It is finished.
The stillness and the terrible, gripping fear were suffocating. They echoed acrossthe span of the universe. Then I heard the earth roar from beneath. The ground shookviolently, and I listened to the forceful tearing of the veilit rang in my ears.
