When the fabric of the church is stretched and tested by the winds of - photo 3

When the fabric of the church is stretched and tested by the winds of convulsing change, some things remain uncontested, unchanged, and uncompromised. The lordship of Jesus Christ remains the continuing constant that preserves the church, Christs body, from the effects of those forces that would compromise its integrity.

Frank Moore writes with power, understanding, and passion. From deep within his intellect, as well as his heart, comes this ringing testimony to the lordship of Christ. Dr. Moore explores the full range of our Lords royal authority that translates into fresh insights and subtle reminders of the churchs allegiance to its King.

Every Christian will benefit from the study of this topic. The abrasive power of an alien culture threatens the church in every age. When believers are armed both with the power of the Spirit and the presence of the Word, the church does more than just retain its spiritual soundness. Under Christs banner, the church perseveres and will fulfill its earthly mission.

Dr. David Graves

General Superintendent

Church of the Nazarene

I completed my research and began writing this book several years ago. One morning, in the middle of my writing session, the telephone rang. Our son, Brent, called to give us bad news about our eighteen-month-old granddaughter, Marley. While having a routine well-baby visit at the doctors office, something abnormal surfaced. Brent and Nikki, his wife, immediately took Marley to the childrens hospital. The first test revealed a malignant brain tumor.

Sue and I dropped everything and quickly drove to Kansas City to support our kids. This book went into a box under my desk for three years. Our journey with Marley during that time was filled with both high and low times emotionally. We learned to cherish every minute of every day with her. She taught us a lifetime of lessons about the meaning of life and faith in Christ. We each grew in remarkable ways from that blessed but difficult journey we walked together.

A few weeks after we returned from the cemetery, I got the box of random thoughts of this book out from under my desk. I decided it was time to write again. I realized as I started writing that Marley cast her impression on every page. You see, the lordship of Christ has taken on an entirely different meaning for me as a result of Marleys life. Now I think of Jesus not only as Lord over all the areas you are going to read about in this book but also as the One who presently has the care of my precious granddaughter.

Marley reminds me daily to keep heavens values in mind, to not hold too tightly to this worlds goods, and to long for the things important to God. All of these reminders point me to the lordship of Christ on a daily basis. That is why I say Marley impacted everything I wrote. That is why I asked Brent to write the last chapter. I wanted you to hear a dads perspective on this subject. How does our family say Jesus is Lord after what we have experienced? I know many readers have experienced similar or related losses in life. I trust you will be encouraged and offered a word of hope as you read Brents words.

I continue to be in debt to my wonderful wife, Sue, who supports me completely in my writing ministry. She brainstorms concepts with me, clears my calendar to write, and proofs with the eye of an eagle. I could never write without her undying love and support. Ours is a team ministry. Our whole family prays that you will be blessed and changed by this book and that somehow through it Marley will impact you as much as she impacted us.

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:

Who, being in very nature God,

did not consider equality with God something to be used to
his own advantage;

rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,

being made in human likeness.

And being found in appearance as a man,

he humbled himself

by becoming obedient to death
even death on a cross!

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place

and gave him the name that is above every name,

that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,

in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father.

Phil. 2:5-11

The twenty-first century is now well underway, and Christians are everywhere. They have spread throughout the world and are found on every continent, speaking nearly every language known to humanity. Two thousand or so years have passed since Jesus walked along the shores of Galilee, and during that time his message has taken root in countless hearts. Starting with eleven disciplestwelve minus the one who betrayed himJesus grew his church to where it is today. He filled his disciples and those who followed after them with the Holy Spirit. Empowered by that Spirit, ordinary Christianslike you and medown through the centuries have reached others with the good news about Jesus. Ours is an incredible heritage!

Perhaps the most common phrase that has united all of us everywhere and in every time is Jesus is Lord. That phrase appears in more languages and more countries than any other. From large sanctuaries filled with suburban believers to thatched-roof churches packed with rural worshippers, the message remains the same around the world: Jesus is Lord!
