Acknowledgments
The subject of this book addresses exactly where Ive shined a spotlight in my life. First of all, Id like to thank Angela Wix at Llewellyn for finding me at an expo and inviting me to write a book about my life focus. It was meant to be! A special thank you to the staff at Llewellyn for all of your assistance with this project. Much of what I have learned and applied in my everyday and spiritual life are tools that I learned from the Pathwork lectures. The 258 Pathwork Guide lectures were transmitted for many years through the spiritual channel of Eva Pierrakos. These teachings were brought by a spirit entity who is known as the Guide. A big thank you goes out to Eva, The Guide, and all who were involved in spreading the wisdom found in these teachings. I could not complete any project that involves writing without the help of Ja-lene Clark, a creative genius and writer herself, who works magic by helping others extract content and turn it into a finished work. A big thank also you goes out to Joanne Sprott for her precise editing skills. Thanks to Kent Robison for his tireless help in running errands, doing chores, cat-keeping, wood-piling, and general support. Thank you to my dad, Donald Harris, for his love and support. I appreciate all of you who discouraged me from becoming an artist by profession because in doing that you helped me to connect with my inner strength and determination. Finally, thank you to all of you whom Ive encountered in my love of the creative process, including both my teachers and my students, because we are all each others teachers. Whoops, and thanks to Timmy the cat who kept me company right on the keypad during the entire writing of the book.
Introduction
One of my greatest joys in life is to help folks develop their creativity. Im amazed at the number of people who tell me that they were discouraged from their various creative efforts while in elementary or high school. Perhaps they were told they were not good at drawing, someone may have laughed at their book report, or they did not excel in glee club but wanted very much to sing.
We are especially vulnerable to criticism during our school years. Being told that we are not creative may result in scars that can take years of inner work to overcome. Too much criticism can stifle creativity for life. In teaching my art-making workshops, I take great joy in watching those who have stayed away from art for years and, with great trepidation, have found the courage to attend. I watch as they tiptoe into their artwork and gradually become more confident as the workshop progresses. Even if some students do not continue to make art, they have conquered a demon by showing up to create. Facing our fears is empowering.
