To Jan, Ashley, and Christopher,
the creative inspiration
in my life
acknowledgments
So many people have shared their ideas, inspiration, and support in helping me get the words on paper.
My family has been key to birthing this project. My wife and soulmate Jans loving support, faith, wise counsel, and many hours spent reading and rereading the manuscript have kept me going. Her ideas have strengthened each chapter, and her inspiration provided the great title. My children, Ashley and Christopher, who sacrificed many weekends and evenings with Dad, have provided great ideas, stories, suggestions, and love that fueled me through the process.
Others have made essential contributions, especially:
Rick Benzel, my tireless editorial collaborator, who worked with me to shape my original ideas and drafts into a finely polished manuscript;
Jeff Herman, my agent, who saw potential in a rough proposal and had the creative persistence to find a publisher who shared our view of the project;
Pam Krauss, my editor, Margot Schupf, Jane Treuhaft, Andrea Peabbles, Barbara Marks, Elizabeth Van Itallie (whose wonderful design has brought the words on each page to life), and all the people at Crown who helped shape the manuscript and develop a wonderful book;
Deanna Berg, my friend and collaborator in creative seminars and workshops, who has provided great guidance and insight into the field of creativity.
Finally, I want to extend my gratitude to many others who have shared research, stories, ideas, and assistance: Carol Adrienn, Dr. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Betty Edwards, Joyce Florey, Patricia Fripp, Dr. Joel Goodman, Dale Irvin, Dewitt Jones, Michael LeBoeuf, Dr. Joseph Lee, Mary LoVerde, John Pearson, Dr. G. preface
Most of us wish we were more creative. We may dream of someday inventing an amazing new product or technology, directing a movie, writing a popular song, or painting a masterpiece. We may envision ourselves as great political leaders solving social problems, renowned business leaders brilliantly running a successful company, or respected humanitarians bringing new ideas and peace to the world. Or we may hope to be exciting and wonderful parents who can bring joy and excitement to our children day after day through our creative efforts.
The good news is that increasing your creativity is truly possible. Whatever your educational background or current creative experience, you can achieve far beyond what you had previously imagined or dreamed. You can direct an Academy Award-winning film, write a best-selling book, discover a drug, or pioneer a new theory. You can channel your creativity into improving an existing process at your workplace, developing an artistic hobby for yourself, or becoming a creative force in your community. If you fear your creativity has been stifled or lost, be assured that you can revitalize it and take it to new heights.
I wrote this book because I am a firm believer in living a creative life. For all of us, being creative is much more enjoyable and inspiring than living a life of monotonous routine. A creative life increases understanding and appreciation of new ideas, of other people, and of the world in general. Creativity unlocks the mind and makes the spirit soar. In a word, creativity is what makes you feel
