INTRODUCTION
"We were all born with acertain degree of power. The key to success is discovering thisinnate power and using it." - Les Brown, musician
Many of us think that success in lifeis due to accident and luck, and that there is little one can do tostem the tide of fate that governs our lives. Men and women areeither born happy and successful or miserable andfailure-prone.
But why should we be bound by theopinion we have of ourselves or by the opinion we think others haveof us? How wonderful would it be to be able to free ourselves ofthose misconceptions and pursue our dreams!
There are things we canall do to be successful. It is true that chance will play its smallpart for and against us. But to quote the great football playerPel, "Success is no accident. It is hardwork, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice, and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do."
Learning is the key to success. Howgreat would it be then to have a sure-fire tool for improvinglearning? That key is called, "memory" and that is what this shortbook is all about.
CHAPTER 1: THE POWER OF MEMORY
Memory unlocks the mind's potential. To make successful decisions and to create, we need to be able torecall ideas and facts quickly and easily. The more powerful thememory is, the greater capacity the mind has to make connectionsbetween concepts and to create new ideas. This book will teach youthe memory skills you need to successfully do that and thus achieveyour goals.
Many of us have negative notions aboutmemory. We recall having multiplication tables or the periodictable drummed into our heads as children by, perhaps, uninspiringteachers, and maybe being punished for not being able to perfectlymemorize them. And after all that pain, we may not remember thosethings years after school, so what was the point? Even if I doremember them, how much of it serves me now? We very often learntthings that had no practical use. There is none of that in thisbook. Instead, you will be introduced to tried and true methods, which are both challenging and interesting. More importantly, theyare relevant to what you want to know now.
It is sometimes said that a goodmemory is not necessary in this Information Age, because everythingcan be learned through Google. It is true that information isreadily accessible, but not at our fingertips, where it needs tobe. If we decide to do a Google search when a decision needs to betaken immediately, we risk losing opportunity. We waste time. Welook unprofessional. Managers, CEOs, heads of state and otherfigures who make weighty decisions every day do not want advisorswho will say, "I'll get on the Net and come back to you." They wantpeople who know the information they need and who have thatinformation right now.
The methods this book will teach youare not complicated. However, they do require commitment anddiscipline. Perseverance will surely reveal the amazing things yourbrain can do.
CHAPTER 2: PREPARING THE MIND
It is important to first identify whatprevents you from improving your memory. You may not even be awareof any impediment. Yet if you are aware, then you can address whatis holding you back and maximize the chances of success. Here aresome of the most common things we tell ourselves that prevent usfrom flourishing.
I Am Powerless
We often convince ourselves we cannotdo something because we really want to believe that. It protects usfrom the sting of potential failure. We say we are not smartenough, that the gods have not equipped us with the necessarynatural talent or that we do not have the time. A persistent killeris the notion that ageing diminishes the learningcapacity.
If you begin with the premise that youare not smart, you may as well not try anything. But in fact you donot require creative intelligence to improve your memory. Memoryinstead increases your creativity. This is something we will lookat a little later on.
As for talent, anyone can use thesimple methods you will learn. Time? Even in our busy, modern, constrained lives we can still find a few moments to exercise ourbrains, and that is all it takes. Many busy people find time towork out their bodies at the gym. Why not find a little time towork out the brain?
I Am Too Old
This is a persistent myth.Psychologists and educators will tell you that the capacity of amind to learn does not diminish with age. Unfortunately, society nolonger values ageing as it used to do. However, bucking the ideathat we diminish with age, many people continue to learn andachieve new goals well beyond their fifties. Edmond Hoyle was 70 in1741when he began writing the voluminous rules of the card games weenjoy today. Ronald Reagan became President of the United States at69, and a 107-year-old Australian woman started a blog of her ownlife, The "Life of Riley" in 2007 from a nursing home in Woy Woy,New South Wales. At the time she was believed to be the oldestblogger in the world.
