INTRODUCTION
Self-discipline, drive, determination-whatever you call it - is one of the cornerstones of making asuccess out of your life. Self-discipline means buckling down anddoing something you would rather not do in order to achieve yourgoals in life.
Weve all been there that cold wintermorning when the weather is miserable and we would rather stay inbed than go for a run; facing down temptation alley at thegrocery store or sitting and working on that report when all youwant to do is binge on Netflix.
Read any story about someone who is asuccess and the overriding factor is that they did whatever ittook. These are people who were able to delay gratification for agoal on the distant horizon. People with an iron will. It justseems some people are born with a lot more drive and determinationthan everyone else.
Do you wish you were one of those drivenpeople? Do you wish you had the willpower or discipline to workevery day at achieving your goals? Do you wish you had been blessedat birth with an iron control over your own will?
Well, I have news for you no one is bornwith self-discipline. Think about a small child for a minute theyhardly have any self-control at all. They speak their minds, crywhen they want to and cannot always be reasoned with.Self-discipline is a skill that is learned like any other. And thatis great news for you! It means you can learn to be moreself-disciplined at any age. And all you need to have is acommitment to learning the skill.
You can be just as driven and focused as thesuccessful people you admire.
Want to learn how?
In this book, we will cover whatself-discipline is, how to know whether or not you areself-disciplined, the benefits of being self-disciplined and how toimprove your skills in the area. We will work through the processtogether step by step, with simple daily exercises and advice youcan actually implement in your life.
Are you ready to get yourself on the trainto Successville? All aboard, here we go.
CHAPTER 1: WHAT IS SELF-DISIPLINE?
Self-discipline means setting yourself to dothings that should be done, even when there are other things youwould far rather be doing.
For example, self-discipline will motivateyou to get up half an hour earlier on a cold morning so that youcan go out on your daily run when you would rather stay nice andcozy in bed. Self-discipline means being willing to sacrificethings you would really enjoy in order to achieve your goal.
Let us say, you have a couple of beers whenyou get home at night but you have decided you are committed tolosing weight. It is self-discipline that will prevent you fromreaching out for those beers going forward. Self-discipline is thecomplete ability to ignore temptation and do what needs to bedone.
It is the school athlete that trains forhours a day when their friends are out having fun. It is the dieterwho ignores the temptation to wolf down junk food in order to loseweight. It is the person who gives up their daily cup of Starbucksso they can save money. It is the student who chooses to studyinstead of going to a rave.
I'm certain you get the picture self-discipline and sacrifice go hand in hand.
CHAPTER 2: WHY DON'T I HAVE SELF-DISCIPLINE?
If you are reading this book, there is anexcellent chance you feel that you have little self-discipline.Maybe you think you were born without it, maybe you think you arejust a weak person but, for whatever reason, self-discipline issomething that seems to be beyond you.
I have some good news and some bad news foryou self-discipline is a learned skill.
What this means is you can improve in thisarea if you are willing to put in the work to do so. It is not thatyou have no self-discipline at all, but more likely that you havenot found something that you want so badly that you are willing todo anything in order to get it.
Look back over the events in your life canyou think of a time when you really wanted something? For me, theturning point came when I saw some pictures of myself on a holidaytrip. It was not that I had not known I was obese before but seeingmyself in the photos brought home how bad it really was.
I decided then and there that I would dietand exercise until I lost the weight.
Now, up until this point, I had tried anumber of diets and none of them seemed to really help. I wouldlose a few pounds and then my self-discipline would fail and Iwould go back to eating normally again. This time around though, Istuck to the diet and exercised until I reached my goal weight.
Why the change? It was like somewhere insideme a switch was flipped and I suddenly had the self-discipline Ineeded. The truth is that the self-discipline had been there allalong but I had not yet found a good enough reason to practiceit.
Now the bad news, there is no more room forblaming your lack of self-discipline for what has been going wrongin your life. If you have been trying to accomplish a goal and haveyet to succeed, it pays to re-examine your motives for achievingthe goal you are aiming for. Is it something you really want foryourself or are you doing it because it is something you should bedoing? You might realize the goal you are aiming for is actuallynot the most important thing to you and that could be why yourself-discipline has been failing you.
