To my friend, Helen, without whose faithful support art-journaling would never have been born, and for my parents, John and Mary.
In memory of Dad, a creative seer, and Mom, who delights in words.
Acknowledgments
Like any other work of art, this book created itself as I worked on it. I began the manuscript with a firm plan, but a myriad of tiny nudges within and without emerged, changing the focus, clarifying the process, creating something new. I am familiar with this happening with a painting; it stunned me that it also occurred in a work of writing.
I am so grateful to Jessica Kingsley Publishers for enabling this long-held dream of mine to go forward. To have the art-journaling process in a written form and to send it out into the world is awesome.
My editor, Leonie Sloman, is such a blessing. I first heard her gentle voice on the phone from across the sea. Ruth Ballantyne continued the editorial process with her reassuring communications, shepherding this work along its way. My sincere thanks goes out to the many other people at JKP whose diligent work and expertise brought this book to completion.
The most important acknowledgment goes to Helen Owens, OSF, my friend and fellow retreat facilitator. For over twenty years she has encouraged me to develop and present this work, and has made possible many opportunities that have pushed the project forward. I am indebted to her and to the milieu of Lourdes Wellness Center, the playground of art-journalings childhood.
Thanks to Michele A. Piccinini who typed the early manuscript long before I knew anything about word-processing, and whose generous eye proofed, formatted, and revised many subsequent versions with characteristic excellence.
My gratitude extends to Andy and Rachel Hieb, Frederick Franck, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, and my dad, John Hieb, who taught me about seeing; and to Patricia Corkery, RSM, Thomas Merton, and my mother, Mary Hieb, who taught me about words; and to Ethel Sweeney, RSM, who introduced a high school student to the design elements of art which have been an unending source of fascination ever since; and to Margaret Ellen Burke, SC, who one day asked me to hold art and writing before the Mystery, and that changed everything.
Mark Thellmann is an extraordinary photographic artist, writer and friend. He searched out and captured design elements in nature. He photographed my line drawings and examples of art-journalings. He set up and visually translated icons and sculptures to add their stories to this work. Marks contribution to so many aspects of my creative work is ongoing and invaluable. He and his wife, Charlene, generously lent their space and insight to this project, stirring and yielding more beauty and truth in our world.
Thanks to Sydney Hieb and to Judy Bowers, who allowed me to use their art-journaling meditations in a most direct way. The other artwork and stories included in this book are composites of individual experiences. Details have been altered to ensure confidentiality. In most cases, I have reinterpreted the original art to present an example, while maintaining the private nature of the work.
My line drawings scattered throughout the text serve as visual presences. They wanted to come along for the journey.
Amy Woodworth, President at Crystal Publications, Glenview, Illinois, granted permission to lean heavily on Elements and Principles of Art: Teachers Guide (Crystal Publications 1996a). Thanks to that gift, I was able to weave both definitions and examples from that source into my meditations on art language in .
Judy Hewett read the manuscript right before its foray into the light. Her insights caressed the edges, polishing, and sanding places with quiet attention and expertise. Her gaze is creative.
This has been a project of long duration, and so there are many who will be missed in the thanking. Early seeds were sown through my work with Presence and its former editor, Susan Jorgensen. Carol Jean Vale, SSJ, unwittingly facilitated the first draft by engaging me as a keynote presenter at Spiritual Directors International Symposium before I could fully realize the impact of that opportunity. Other serendipitous encounters still continue to move and bless this endeavour.
