What Did God Do with Your Sin?

Every Christian has experienced days or even seasons of feeling extreme guilt over past or present sins, thinking that God is angry or disgusted with themsometimes even wondering if theyre truly saved. This often happens when believers fixate on their sins while forgetting what Christ has already done on their behalf at the cross. Sam Storms explains it this way: What consumes us is what we have done by sinning. What ought to consume us is grateful meditation on what God has done with our sinning.

In his latest book, Storms addresses this anxiety over sin by reminding believers of the good news of the gospel. Beginning with an explanation of the glory of penal substitution, he walks through 12 things God did with their sin, including forgiving it, passing over it, and casting it into the depths of the sea. He also explains 3 things God will never do with their sin, such as counting it against them. Walking through the Bibles teaching, Storms helps believers find freedom, joy, and peace in knowing what God has done (and will never do) with their sin through the redemptive sacrifice of Jesus.

Of the dozen things God has done with your sin, none is more foundational to securing for you the joy and peace of a clean conscience than the fact that God has laid your sin upon his Son. In fact, all of the eleven remaining things that God has done with your sin are grounded in this one. Most of the other eleven truths we will explore are images or metaphors or analogies designed to drive home the glorious truth that because of Gods having laid our sin on his Son, we are forgiven. In other words, it is precisely, and for no other reason, that God has judged Jesus in your place, as your atoning substitute, that we can even speak of the possibility of forgiveness. As a result of its foundational nature, this chapter inevitably needs more space than the other eleven things God has done with our sin.

The Glory of Penal Substitutionary Atonement

I should probably begin with defining my terms, as I suspect some of you are scratching your heads when you look at the subheading of this chapter. Penal ? Substitutionary ? Atonement ? What does that mean and why is it glorious?

Ill unpack these terms in greater detail as we move forward, but for now, a brief explanation is in order. Our sin warrants a penalty. We call it punishment or judgment. That penalty is eternal damnation. Each of us is a hell-deserving sinner. That is the penalty we incur when we commit cosmic treason against God by defying his will and living in rebellious unbelief. Our only hope of escaping this penalty is if there is a qualified and willing substitute to take our place and exhaust the demands of divine law that are against us. This is why we speak of the death of Jesus as a penal substitution. He suffers the penalty in our place. The result is that when we lay hold of this truth by faith alone and invest our hope of reconciliation with God in who Jesus is and what he has done on the cross, atonement is made. We are made at-one with God. Does this not merit the acclamation, glory ? The glory of the atonement as found in Christs penal substitutionary death is the heart of the biblical gospel. Were now ready to dig a little deeper into this marvelous truth.

So, what do the biblical authors have in mind when they say things such as we find in Isaiah 53 and 1 Peter 2? Lets begin with the Old Testament text.

He was despised and rejected by men,

a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief;

and as one from whom men hide their faces

he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Surely he has borne our griefs

and carried our sorrows;

yet we esteemed him stricken,

smitten by God, and afflicted.

But he was pierced for our transgressions;

he was crushed for our iniquities;

upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,

and with his wounds we are healed.

All we like sheep have gone astray;

we have turnedevery oneto his own way;

and the Lord has laid on him

the iniquity of us all. (Isa. 53:36)

The most explicit assertion in this paragraph is found in verse 6, where the prophet speaks of the Messiah, the suffering servant, as the one on whom the Lord (i.e., God the Father) has laid... the iniquity of us all. Other statements speak of much the same thing: we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted (v. 4). Again, he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities (v. 5a). It was upon him that the chastisement that brought us peace was laid (v. 5b). Twice more, Isaiah declares that he shall bear their [your!] iniquities (v. 11) and he bore the sin of many (v. 12).
