You cannot un-know what youre about to discover.

In September 2017, a popular Japanese television program followed the lives of seven elderly people in the small city of Kytango. The ninety- to one-hundred-year-olds were filmed as they went about their day. They woke up, ate small meals, visited family, ran errands, and prepared for bed. It wasnt the kind of thrilling reality show content you would expect. So why produce it?

Kytango and the region around it have three times more residents over the age of one hundred than the rest of Japan. It has produced Olympic athletes, rock stars, and one of the oldest men in history. The producers of the Japanese show wanted to know what made Kytango so unique.

What they found was truly amazing.

Yes, the individuals they followed exercised daily and ate healthily. But they looked different on the insideat least under a microscope. All seven of these Japanese men and women had unusually high levels of DHEA in their bloodstream. DHEA, considered the longevity hormone, is linked to longer lifespans, lower cancer risk, and better memory.

So was it their diet or environment that caused their bodies to make more of this miracle hormone? Not necessarily. Every person in this region has an ikigai . Ikigai translates to a reason for being or ones reason for waking up in the morning.

For these Japanese people, their ikigai is their purpose in life.

Whether the television producers realized it or not, they discovered an absolute truth. Purpose is the factor that makes life worth living. It doesnt simply add years to your life; it adds life to your years.

Purpose is the factor that makes the difference. Its the difference between simply existing and really living. Purpose simplifies decision-making. It makes better leaders, stronger companies, and happier people. Purpose determines the work you do, the relationships you have, and the life you live.

The pursuit of purpose is the pursuit to matter. And isnt that what we all wantto matter? Yet purpose is rarely a topic of conversation. We dont teach it in our schools or talk about it in houses of worship. We think its irrelevantor worse, inappropriateto discuss at work.

Dont believe us? Bring up purpose at your next dinner party and get ready for blank stares. Its one of those topics like Blockchain or the Electoral College. We think we know what it is, but wed have a hard time defining it if someone asked.

The word purpose has become meaningless. The discussion around purpose has become so broad, emotional, and ridiculous that it leaves one to think it can only be discovered at the top of a mountain or while gazing into a sunset.

Why We Were Wrong

Thats what we believed. We thought finding our purpose was something that just happened. If you were lucky, you found it early. If you werent so lucky, you had to wander through life waiting for someone else to show you your purpose and wondering if this is all there is.

We didnt discover our purpose until we were forced to. Before we met, each of us was having a crisis of purpose. Brian lost a marriage and his job in the same month. Gabrielle checked off all of the supposed-to boxesdegrees, jobs, incomebut achievement wasnt enough. For all of the work we had done to plan our lives, our plans werent working out. In a few short years, we had gone from brimming with potential to experiencing feelings of regret.
