Morning Prayers
The Prayer ofSt. Ephrem the Syrian
This prayeris read in all the Holy Great Lent, except on Saturdays andSundays.

O Lord and Master of my life, a spirit of idleness, despondency, ambition, and idle talking give me not. Prostration.

But rather a spirit of chastity, humble-mindedness, patience, and love bestow upon me, Thy servant. Prostration.

Yea, O Lord King, grant me to see my failings and not condemnmy brother; for blessed art Thou unto the ages of ages. Amen. Prostration.

O God, cleanse me, a sinner.

12 times, with a reverence each time, and then the entire prayer:

O Lord and Master of my life, a spirit of idleness, despondency, ambition, and idle talking give me not. But rather aspirit of chastity, humble-mindedness, patience, and love bestowupon me, Thy servant. Yea, O Lord King, grant me to see my failingsand not condemn my brother; for blessed art Thou unto the ages ofages. Amen. Prostration.

Having risen fromsleep, before any other action, stand reverently, consideringthyself to be in the presence of the All-seeing God, and, havingmade the sign of the Cross, say:

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the HolySpirit. Amen.

Then pause amoment, until all thy senses are calmed and thy thoughts forsakeall things earthly; and then make three bows, saying:
The Prayer of thePublican

O God, be merciful to me, a sinner. (Thrice)

The BeginningPrayer

O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, for the sake of the prayersof Thy most pure Mother and all the saints, have mercy on us.Amen.

Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee.

O Heavenly King, The Comforter, Spirit of Truth, Who arteverywhere present and fillest all things, Treasury of blessingsand Giver of life: Come and abide in us, and cleanse us of everyimpurity, and save our souls, O Good One.

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (Thrice)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

O Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us.

O Lord, blot out our sins.

O Master, pardon our iniquities.

O Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities for Thy name'ssake.

Lord, have mercy. (Thrice)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thykingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Giveus this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as weforgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliverus from the evil one.

Troparia to theHoly Trinity

Having risen from sleep, we fall down before Thee, O Good One,and the angelic hymn we cry aloud to Thee, O Mighty One. Holy,Holy, Holy art Thou. O God, through the Theotokos, have mercy onus.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the HolySpirit.

From bed and sleep Thou hast raised me up, O Lord: enlightenmy mind and heart and open my lips that I may hymn Thee, O HolyTrinity:

Holy, Holy, Holy art Thou, O God, through the Theotokos, havemercy on us.

Both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Suddenly the judge shall come, and the deeds of each shall belaid bare; but with fear do we cry at midnight. Holy, Holy, Holyart Thou, O God, through the Theotokos, have mercy onus.

Lord, have mercy. (Twelvetimes)

Prayer of SaintBasil the Great to the Most Holy Trinity

As I rise from sleep I thank Thee, O Holy Trinity, for throughThy great goodness and patience Thou wast not angered with me, anidler and sinner, nor hast Thou destroyed me in my sins, but hastshown Thy usual love for men, and when I was prostrate in despair,Thou hast raised me to keep the morning watch and glorify Thypower. And now enlighten my mind's eye and open my mouth to studyThy words and understand Thy commandments and do Thy will, and hymnThee in heartfelt adoration and praise Thy Most Holy Name ofFather, Son and Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the agesof ages. Amen.

O come let us worship God our King. (Bow)

O come let us worship and fall down before Christ our King andGod. (Bow)

O come let us worship and fall down before Christ Himself, ourKing and God. (Bow)

Psalm 50

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Thy great mercy; andaccording to the multitude of Thy compassions blot out mytransgression. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanseme from my sin.

For I know mine iniquity, and my sin is ever before me.Against Thee only have I sinned and done this evil before Thee, that Thou mightest be justified in Thy words, and prevail when Thouart judged.

For behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and in sins did mymother bear me. For behold, Thou hast loved truth; the hidden andsecret things of Thy wisdom hast Thou made manifest untome.

Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be made clean;Thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter thansnow.

Thou shalt make me hear joy and gladness; the bones that havebeen humbled will rejoice.

Turn Thy face away from my sins, and blot out all mineiniquities.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spiritwithin me.

Cast me not away from Thy presence, and take not Thy HolySpirit from me.

Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation, and with Thygoverning Spirit establish me.

I shall teach transgressors Thy ways, and the ungodly shallturn back unto Thee.

Deliver me from blood-guiltiness. O God, Thou God of mysalvation; my tongue shall rejoice in Thy righteousness.

O Lord, Thou shalt open my lips, and my mouth shall declareThy praise.

For if Thou hadst desired sacrifice, I had given it; withwhole-burnt offerings Thou shalt not be pleased.

A sacrifice unto God is a broken spirit; a heart that isbroken and humbled God will not despise.

Do good, O Lord, in Thy good pleasure unto Sion, and let thewalls of Jerusalem be builded.

Then shalt Thou be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with oblation and whole-burnt offerings.

Then shall they offer bullocks upon Thine altar.

The Symbol of theOrthodox Faith

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven andearth, and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God;begotten of the Father before all ages; Light from Light, True Godfrom True God, begotten, not made, of one essence with the Father, through Whom all things were made: Who for us men, and for oursalvation, came down from Heaven, and was incarnate by the HolySpirit and the Virgin Mary, and became Man: And was crucified forus under Pontius Pilate, and suffered and was buried: And He roseon the third day according to the Scriptures: And ascended intoHeaven, and sitteth at the right hand of the Father. And shall comeagain, with glory, to judge both the living and the dead; Whosekingdom shall have no end.
