Standing Up for What Is Right

PURPOSE

To understand the importance of making right choices for a meaningful and happy life

In this chapter you will learn

  • What it takes to have a life of happiness rather than a life of emptiness
  • Four reasons why right choices are so important
  • Helpful ideas for taking a stand for what is right

Jana had never imagined she would be facing the decision that was before her today. As a former member of a high school youth group, she had learned much about making right choices and honoring God in her daily life, but this seemed to be beyond anything she had been tested with before. How can I possibly do the right thing, she wondered, when my college psychology professor has assigned me to watch four one-hour periods of X-rated pornographic films and write a personal review as part of my grade? Without this assignment Jana's grade would suffer greatly, but she also knew that God's desire was for her to be sexually pure. What should she do?

Michael's history teacher gave an essay assignment with the freedom to choose any historical person. As a Christian, Michael decided to write on the life of Jesus of Nazareth. When he turned in his proposal, his teacher adamantly objected, even though others in the class were writing on religious figures. He tried to reason with her, but she refused to budge. How should he respond? Should he stand up and be bold for his faith?
