Acknowledgements

I thank Allah for the blessings and privileges I have been bestowed. The craft of writing reflects a degree of privilege, and I am mindful to even be able to do so in relative peace is an immeasurable blessing. Following from this, I would like to thank everyone who has entrusted me with their stories. My words may never convey the weight of their significancefor myself and everyone elseand I pray they forgive me this shortcoming.

There are countless of people across the world who have inspired my thinking, work, and faithI pray you know who you are. I am immensely grateful to those who directly helped shape the book, either by sharing valuable feedback or providing necessary counsel: Asim Qureshi, Sahar Ghumkhor, Jeyda Hammad, Yassir Morsi, Reem Abu-Hayyah, Derek Summerfield, Mahdi Bazara, Nadya Ali, and Hil Aked.

I would also like to thank everyone at SAGE who helped bring this book to fruition. This includes series editors Jason Arday and Meredith D. Clark for their wonderful insights and above all the encouragement I received from Delayna Spencer, the senior commissioning editor, was essential for the publication of this book.

My children, Aya, Yaqeen and Ameen, did no favours taking turns waking me up at night throughout the books journey. But I always found inspiration to dream a better world in their presence, and for this, I am eternally grateful. Finally, this book would not have been written without my wife, Amani Hassani. She is my confidence and my buffer from the world, especially when its weight becomes staggering.

1 Introduction: Friendly Ears

I thought I could trick the psychologist.

Adam chuckled and took another bite of his burger. I had known Adam for years, yet this was the first I heard of this story. Alongside two friends, we sat at a corner table where the shops walls glowed beneath old, pearly lights. Adam was in good spirit, unaware the tale of state violence he was about to share would not be his last. Something was racist in the state of Denmark.
