Preface
I ndian Astrology is an ancient Divine Science. It was first revealed by Lord Brahma to Surya Dev, who then taught it to Trikaldarshi (omniscient) Maharishis. Their disciples recorded the details in Sanskrit language, then common parlance, for the benefit of posterity.
During the long intervening period and foreign invasions some portions of the original treatises were damaged or mutilated which is evident from the variance found in the texts brought out by different publishers. The intricacy of Sanskrit language also caused some variance during translation from Sanskrit to other languages.
The author initially faced some difficulty while learning the subject, as different authors highlighted different aspects in their books. After sifting the fundamental rules, the author first tested these in the horoscope of himself and near and dear ones whose life events were known to him. On gaining confidence he applied these rules in a large number of cases and achieved proficiency. During the last seven years, the author has also contributed to nearly ninety articles on different facets of human life, both in English and Hindi, in leading astrological magazines, like The Astrological Magazine, and Modern Astrology published from Bangalore; Star Teller from Chennai; Times of Astrology (English and Hindi), and BABAJI (English and Hindi) published from New Delhi. Thus the author has been deeply associated with astrology for over 12 years.
The book comprises 14 Chapters. As correct and detailed horoscopes can now be easily prepared on computer, the author has straightaway started with the elaboration of the basic concepts.
The contents of the book have been presented in a lucid manner so as to maintain interest and inquisitiveness. The Chapters (1) Rationale of Exaltation of Planets, (2) Varga Charts, (3) Shadabala, and (4) Retrograde Planets are important as their contents are not available in any book in such detail. The Chapters (1) Inter-relationship of Signs, Bhava and Planets, (2) Lucky Births, and (3) Horoscopic Evaluation at First Glance, demonstrate practical application of the rules stated in the book. Liberal use of example horoscopes has been made to facilitate assimilation of the subject.
The author most respectfully dedicates the book to his preceptor and mentor late Shri O.P. Sharma, M.A., former DIG Police, and a profound astrologer, and his wife late Smt. Manju Sharma, M.A., who continue to inspire the author through their benign blessings.
The author is grateful to Mr. Udyan Sharma and his wife Mrs. Ritu Sharma, and his own daughter Mrs. Renu Singh, who have been constantly prompting for early completion of the book.
The author also expresses his sincere thanks to the publisher for bringing out the book in decent form in the shortest possible time.
The author hopes that this humble attempt based on serious study and practice of Astrology for over 12 years will prove a handy compendium to those interested in learning astrology, and will also get the approbation of learned scholars of this Divine Science. Any suggestions for improvement are welcome.

Chapter I
The Horoscope
T he Indian Astrology is a Divine Science. It is called (the eyes of Vedas). The 12 Rasis (signs), 9 Grahas (planets), and 27 Nakshatras (Constellations) are its basic components. The 12 Rasis of 30 each and 27 Nakshatras of 1320' each start from 0 of the zodiac and simultaneously end at 360. A Rasi contains 2 Nakshatra.
Horoscope is the planetary chart erected for the date, time and place of birth of any individual. The duration of a sign is approximately two hours, and the 12 signs (Rasis) rise one after another during 24 hours. The sign rising in the Eastern Horizon at birth is called the First House or Lagna, and other signs follow in the fixed order. After evaluating the nature, location, inter-relationship, strength, and Dasa-Bhukti of planets, an astrologer foretells the future events in an individuals life.
The horoscope is cast differently in North, South and East India. Treating Leo sign as Lagna, the chart in different format will be as under.
This chart is used in North India and in some other States as well. Here Lagna is indicated in the topmost square and other signs follow serially anti-clockwise. Then planets are posited in different signs according to their position indicated in the Ephemeries (Panchang).
This chart is primarily used in South India. The signs are fixed and move clockwise. The location of Lagna is written in the sign it falls, and planetary position indicated.
This chart is used in East India. Here also the signs are fixed. These move towards left. Lagna is indicated in the sign it falls and planetary position indicated.
The planets, except Rahu and Ketu, have forward motion, unless they become retrograde occasionally. On the contrary, Rahu and Ketu always move in reverse direction, i.e. from 5th to 4th, 3rd and so on.
The example horoscopes have been displayed both in North India and South India formats.
The Rasis
The fixed Zodiac of 360 has been divided in 12 equal signs (Rasis) of 30 each. Starting from 0 of the Zodiac, these signs are in seriatim named as Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. The 12 signs are allotted to different planets according to their mutual compatability. The Sun and the Moon are allotted one sign each, Leo and Cancer respectively. Mars is lord of Aries and Scorpio. Venus is lord of Taurus and Libra. Mercury rules over Gemini and Virgo. Jupiter rules over Sagittarius and Pisces, and Saturn rules over Capricorn and Aquarius.
