Study Guide Introduction
E arnest Shurtleff Holmes wrote the original The Science of Mind: A Complete Course of Lessons in the Science of Mind Spirit in 1926. The contents of this book have withstood the test of time, as they are just as potent and pertinent today as they were when he wrote them. Holmes was a man with the deepest of experience and insight. Definitely committed to his own enlightenment and that of the world, in his research, he tapped into insights that could only be comprehended by one who was of a higher consciousness. The Divine creative forces that he so eloquently speaks of throughout this book, clearly surged through him and propelled him to share metaphysical knowledge and wisdom that is both timeless and universal.
While I have had the honor and pleasure of writing several study guides throughout my career, writing this particular guide was both a great challenge and gift. When I first started navigating through this book, I felt overwhelmed with the density of the text and the apparent paradox in the messages. Like so many enlightened masters with whom I have been privileged to study, many of the teachings appeared to be metaphysical riddles that I had to carefully listen to, and then dissect in order to comprehend their meaning. I eventually learned that often a part of me that my conscious thinking mind may not have fully grasped, had received and understood the messages. As I took the time to really drink in Holmes messages, the effort I made fully comprehend this wonderful book was well worth the additional labor!
I encourage you to forge ahead in this endeavor, being sure to respond to the study guide questions as you peruse the book. While you may be tempted to first read the book, and then perhaps re-visit it along with the study guide, committing to reading the book while answering the questions in the study guide will serve to enrich and deepen your learning of the material. I have written the questions in order to support your own personal evolutionary process. Doing them as you read the book will provide you with a second layer of sensory experience that supports the wisdom of the text, allowing the message to integrate more deeply into your everyday life and practices.
While I have studied metaphysics and I am familiar with the Law of Attraction, in this book, Holmes touched me in a new and provocative way. He constantly emphasized that we are all rooted in One Mind, and that the words that we use are extremely powerful. His message was so impactful, that while Ive studied these tenets in the past, his teaching really took my understanding of the power of the word into a more profound understanding. He also emphasized that we are all a part of the Universal Mind that created us, and while Ive heard this message throughout my life, the way in which he presented this knowledge touched me on a much deeper and more profound way.
As I studied this powerful book, my desire to seek a stronger, more personal connection with the Universal Mind or God, has grown significantly. I hope that these amazing teachings will inspire you as much as they have me. For as we each grow in our consciousness, we contribute to the evolution of the entire world.

These lessons are dedicated to that truth which frees man from himself and sets him on the pathway of a new experience, which enables him to see through the mist to the Eternal and Changeless Reality.
Peace Be Unto Thee, Stranger
Peace be unto thee, stranger, enter and be not afraid.
I have left the gate open and thou art welcome to my home.
There is room in my house for all.
I have swept the hearth and lighted the fire.
The room is warm and cheerful and you will find comfort and rest within.
The table is laid and the fruits of Life are spread before thee.
The wine is here also, it sparkles in the light.
I have set a chair for you where the sunbeams dance through the shade.
Sit and rest and refresh your soul.
Eat of the fruit and drink the wine.
All, all is yours, and you are welcome.
Foreword
I n presenting these lessons on Mental Science, I do not claim to have discovered any new Truth. The Truth has been known in every age by a few; but the great mass of people has never even dreamed that we live in a mental and spiritual world. Today, however, there is a great inquiry into the deeper meaning of life because the race has reached a state of unfoldment where a broader scope is possible.
These lessons are an attempt to put into the spoken word and into print some of those great truths known to the enlightened of all ages.
To suppose that the Creative Intelligence of the world would create man in bondage and leave him bound would be to dishonor that Creative Power which we call God. On the other hand, to suppose that God could make man as an individual, without leaving him to discover himself, would be to suppose an impossibility. Individuality must be spontaneous and can never be automatic. The seed of freedom must be hid within the shell of the human. But, like the Prodigal of old, man must make the great discovery for himself. Although the journey may at times seem hard and the burden too great to bear, man still feels within a subtle sense, a mystical presence, a divine Reality. Thus, the inherent nature of himself is forever seeking to express itself in terms of freedom. We will do well to listen to this inner voice, for it tells us of a life wonderful in its scope, of a love beyond our fondest dreams, of a freedom which the soul craves.
