James Emery White has done a masterful job of explaining discipleship for new and seasoned believers alike. Often the great books on discipleship are deep but inaccessible. Others are easy to read but lack depth. Jim takes a wealth of knowledge and insight on the essentials of Christian discipleship and makes them wonderfully easy to understand but deep enough to authentically help you.
Carey Nieuwhof , leadership author, podcaster, and founding pastor of Connexus Church in Barrie, Ontario
Living a life with Christ is not a onetime commitment. White reminds us it is a lifetime of intentional choices and disciplined practices that help us in our desire to be followers of Jesus.
Suzanne Stabile , author of The Path between Us , coauthor of The Road Back to You , and host of The Enneagram Journey podcast
I have long loved the writings of James Emery White for his unique insights into the Christian faith and his knack for unraveling complex issues. Now he offers us an updated, refreshing guide for following Jesus in a confusing and sometimes hostile world. After I Believe is a practical resource for spiritual growth. Compellingly straightforward, this book will help you align yourself to biblical truth to effect real life-change. Jims chapter on prayer alone makes this book worth buying. If you want to inject your Christian life with a good dose of adventure and wonder, then youll want to read this book.
Skip Heitzig , pastor of Calvary Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and author of The Bible from 30,000 Feet
In After I Believe , James Emery White combines a brilliant understanding of profound biblical truths with a heart to love and lead people toward a lifesaving relationship with Jesus. It lights the way for anyone seeking to take that next step in living life to the fullest as God intended.

I wish to thank the Baker team for their support of this project, our eighth together, and specifically Bob Hosack, who agreed to swapping out our original idea for another very late in the game.
Alli Main continues to serve my life and maintain my deepest gratitude for co-laboring on all of my writing. Whether through research or editing, feedback or ideas, constructive criticism or encouragement, she is nothing less than a godsendwhich means a special thanks to her husband, Keith, as well.
And as always, my wife, Susan, continues to make every page possible in countless ways. Going on forty years of marriage at the time of this writing, my debt to her knows no bounds.
Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and youll recover your life. Ill show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with mewatch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I wont lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and youll learn to live freely and lightly.Jesus, Matthew 11:2830
When I was twenty years old, I had several close friends who knew I was very, very far from God, but they cared about me. I remember how one night when we were together, one of them told me the story of their faith journey to Christ. It came out very naturally in the course of our conversation together. It was interesting, parts of it were convicting, and (admittedly) parts were uncomfortable at times. What was clear was that I wasnt ready. They would invite me to church or to a campus Christian ministry they were a part of, and I would always say no.
I had been raised by a PhD father and a schoolteacher mother. Reading and books, intellectual conversations and debate had been the wallpaper of my life. In our family, Christianity as a belief system was embraced, though we were largely unchurched throughout my childhood. I would have told you I was a Christian because of what I believed, but I wasnt one based on how I behaved. The divide between knowing and doing, believing and behavingthe idea of Savior and the reality of Lordwas stark.
There were moments this was revealed to me in very pointed ways. For example, one late night in college, after more than my fair share of beer or whiskey or whatever my choice had been for that night, I got into a debate with someone who was a Mormon. Ive always been disciplined about research and study, and I loved to debate people. We were talking, and I was slicing and dicing through the historicity and theology of his religion. He remained silent until I was done with my tirade and then had just one question for me in response: How can you say anything to me about whats right or wrong with how you live?
