Georgelle Hirlimans personal papers and archive are held at special collections at the Zimmerman Library at the University of New Mexico.
Kind regards and a sincere thank you to those who helped make the publishing of this book possible, without whose friendship and commitment to Georgelle, this book would still be with her in the ethers.
Born in L.A. on June 11, 1936, Georgelle Hirliman was the adopted child of B movie actress Eleanor Hunt ( Blue Steel ) and producer George A. Hirliman ( Reefer Madness ). Raised in New York City, Georgelle had, by her own account, a difficult childhood and left home as a teenager. A rebellious young woman with a keen wit, she quickly became part of the downtown beat scene in Manhattan, and was in the vanguard of the emerging 60s counter culture. During this period, Georgelle was introduced to tarot and astrology, sparking a lifelong fascination with metaphysics, spirituality and symbolism.
In 1971, Georgelle settled in Santa Fe, NM, which had become home to a thriving counter-culture community. She worked as a radio and print journalist, seeking to expose bureaucratic corruption, celebrating outlaws and outsiders, and set in opposition to ignorance and fear in all its forms. Among her more celebrated exposs was the trial of four bikers accused of a brutal murder in Albuquerque. Convinced the trial was a miscarriage of justice, Georgelle led the fight to prove their innocence. In spite of her work, the bikers were found guilty and given the death penalty. However, some years later the actual murderer came forward, exonerating the four men and vindicating Georgelles efforts.
Her breakthrough book, The Hate Factory ( 1982), detailed the horrors of one of the most infamous prison riots in American history, the New Mexico State Penitentiary riot in 1980. Based on first hand accounts and interviews, the book skewered a bureaucratic system riddled with nepotism, apathy, incompetence and brutality. The Hate Factory remains a seminal work of criminal journalism.
In 1984, suffering from a severe bout of writers block, Georgelle placed herself in a storefront window with a sign that read: Help Me Cure My Writers Block. Curious pedestrians began submitting questions via index cards. Delighted, Georgelle wrote responses and soon the entire window was filled with questions and answers. This act appealed to the performer in me I wanted applause, she later said. This unique literary/performance act was an overnight success, and led to the publication of Dear Writer in the Window: The Wit and Wisdom of a Sidewalk Sage (1992). The book garnered national praise in People Magazine, Harpers, US Daily, New York Magazine, the Wall Street Journal, NY Newsday, and Good Morning America . Id not only discovered a unique way of writing, she said, Id tapped into the need to talk about big questions, why is the sky blue ponderings, for which there was no forum in popular culture.
Her desire to perform continued through a variety of interactive stage shows among them Theatre of Planetary Memory, which endeavored to read an individuals astrological chart through live performance, as well as the autobiographical shows, A Memoir in Three Parts and Dear Writer in the Wi ndow.
Until her death, she delighted in her role as sage, advisor, and provocateur. She died on January 29, 2010 in Santa Fe, New Mexico at the age of 73.
I want to thank everyone who ever had a reading with me: you were my teachers. Special thanks to Steven Maness for inspiring me to write down what I know about Tarot before I left this life. -Georgelle Hirliman

Editors Note:
The book is based on the Thoth deck, illustrated by Frieda Harris, under the direction of Aleister Crowley. This is also the deck Georgelle used in her readings and research. We attempted to gain permission from Ordo Templi Orientis who (theoretically) holds the copyright for the images, but were unable to secure rights for this edition. We have used instead images from the Leigh J. McCloskey, Tarot ReVisioned deck, which capture some of the underlying imagery and symbolism of the original Thoth.
You may wish to pick up a Thoth deck of your own, as many of Georgelles notes pertain to specifics of this deck. However, as Georgelle said, All Tarot decks are telling the same stories, but in different ways and pictures.
The Illustrator:
The images used in this book are those illustrated by Leigh J. McCloskey. Leigh created an entirely new and unique series of drawings representing the twenty-two archetypes of the Major Arcana. His highly acclaimed art and book, Tarot ReVisioned, is the culmination of an eighteen-year creative process, this work reveals a depth and acuity of vision that is both original and profound. His tarot expresses both transcendental and individual qualities of consciousness, the mythological and esoteric, as well as considering how the archetypes interact and influence personal reality and experience.

Whats This Book Going To Teach and Whos The Author Anyway?
This book is meant to serve your desire to use the Tarot cards meaningfully as soon as you have the deck in your possession. It is a digest of a lifetimes study of the Tarot and the systems that are expressed through it: astrology, numerology, Tree of Life, I Ching, eastern philosophies and metaphysics in general. Metaphysics has always been my study. What is metaphysics? American Heritage Dictionary defines metaphysics as:
