FOREWORD
Rachel
Pollack
M
y first
experience
with
this
book
came
well
before
reading
it.
It
was
at
the
Readers
Studio,
a
yearly
conference
in
the
New
York
area
that
has
become
a
major
event
for
Tarot
people
around
the
world.
Marcia
was
one
of
three
presenters,
and
gave
us
a
fascinating
way
to
look
at
the
Minor
Arcana
in
the
famous
Rider
deck
of
A.
E.
Waite
and
P.
C.
Smith
(the
one
that
first
put
action
scenes
on
all
the
cards).
She
identified
each
suit
with
a
medieval
virtue
and
proceeded
to
show
how
each
card
in
that
suit,
each
scene,
could
be
seen
as
either
a
triumph
of
that
virtue
or
a
test
of
its
basic
quality.
I
found
this
not
only
an
exciting
idea
but
a
good
method
to
explore
what
we
see
in
the
pictures
beyond
the
usual
ways
we
have
learned
to
look
at
them.
Consider
the
suit
of
Pentacles,
which
Marcia
aligns
with
the
virtue
of
Charity.
Since
the
original
symbol
for
the
suit
was
Coins,
this
makes
sense.
Two
cards
would
seem
obvious.
In
the
Four
we
see
a
crowned
man
scowling
as
he
holds
tight
to
one
large
Pentacle,
with
two
others
under
his
feet,
and
the
fourth
on
top
of
his
head.
