NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER
The book you hold in your hands has deeply influenced generations in the movement of discipleship to Jesus. The best books are timeless, and most often they cross cultural barriers. NavPress has placed this book in our N AV E SSENTIALS series because it has stood the test of time and has shown the power to touch a new generation of disciples in many settings around the world.
Jesus said, Every teacher of the law who has been instructed about the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old (Matthew 13:52, NIV ). At NavPress, we are conscious of the old and the new, and we treasure both. We live in a world of profound change in publishing, and NavPress is at the forefront of keeping up with the new media. But we are also looking to our heritage to never forget where we have come from and to pass along those timeless Navigator messages that have proven to change lives.
The ministry of The Navigators began in the 1930s through the call of God to Dawson Trotman. Trotmans vision was to teach others, one to one, the biblical principles of discipleship he found beneficial in his own life. He began to teach high school students and local Sunday school classes. In 1933, he and his friends extended their work to reach out to sailors in the U.S. Navy. From there Trotman met and established a partnership with the then up-and-coming evangelist Billy Graham.
One of the men Trotman chose to lead the work with Billy Graham was Lorne Sanny. Sanny went on to become Trotmans successor and served The Navigators for thirty years as its president. The books in the N AV E SSENTIALS series are what Sanny used to call life-borne messages. These are messages that grow out of a life steeped in the Scriptures and lived out in passionate love and obedience to God. They are tested in real life and have a practical authenticity that prompts genuine transformation. We call these N AV E SSENTIALS Voices of The Navigators Past, Present, and Future.
Over the years, I personally have been touched by the messages in the N AV E SSENTIALS series. Each one is part of the fabric of my own discipleship. Im convinced that you, too, will find in them an abundance of godly stimulation and transformative guidance for your own walk with God.

PREFACE
Why write a book on surrender? Well, it all began with a suggestion from my son, who is, like myself, a pastor. We were discussing the need for good, biblical teaching on the subject of surrender. He really jogged my thinking when he said, Dad, I think you ought to write a book on discipline. The more I thought and prayed about it, the more I became convinced he was right.
Some of my friends have commented from time to time that they think of me as a disciplined person. This always puzzles me. I feel like responding as Paul and Barnabas did to the people of Lystra when the people tried to worship them as gods. These two servants of the Lord cried out in protest, We are also men of the same nature as you (Acts 14:15). And I must protest also, for I struggle with discipline just as others do.
However, I am convinced of the necessity of discipline for all who desire to walk in harmony with God. Many Christians find it difficult to accept the importance of discipline, not only because they struggle to live disciplined lives but also because they see discipline in a negative light. Such people even consider Gods discipline of His children as a negative kind of punishment something to be feared. Thus they cannot, or will not, exercise it in their lives.
I see Christians who are missing out on an important part of the love relationship between God and His children: discipline. As I thought about this all-too-typical response to God in this area, I felt the Spirit drawing me to offer some help to my fellow strugglers. I concluded that we all need to better understand discipline, and that the place to begin is with surrender . Thats the focus of this book. We need to cease our struggling and fall happily into the arms of our loving Father. Then walking in step with Him will be a joyful, transforming experience.

CHAPTER 1
THE HUMAN QUESTION
Why do these things happen to me? A thirty-eight-year-old woman sat in my office, nervously tugging at her handkerchief as she spilled out a long string of problems that were plaguing her life.
