Back Cover
Dear friends and fellow sojourners,
If the following are desires of your heart, be encouragedthey are within your grasp:
- reaching and maintaining your God-given size
- a reality-based body image
- finding balance with food
- freedom from the scales
- a sense of well-being
- a closer walk with God
It is a privilege to share what we have experienced in almost forty years of serving those who struggle with food, eating, weight, and body image issues. We have learned a great deal from our own journeys, from the shared experiences of thousands of participants over these many years, and from our great God.
Since starting our ministry in 1975, we have seen trends come and go and many diets that are hot for a season quickly fade. Our ministry is dedicated to the health and well-being of the present and future generations. As our brothers keeper, we are called to reach out to one another in love and compassion, shunning the quick-fix approach that the world has to offer for the sustaining long-term solution based on biblical truth.
Throughout our ministry, we have been given the privilege of seeing thousands of lives transformed as the worldly veil of deception is discarded and Gods truth is revealed and embraced. Equipped with effective spiritual tools, people learn to stand on a firm foundation rather than relying on shaky human willpower.
Legalistic practices such as radical diets or the familiar counting of points and fat grams cannot alter the way we think or change the condition of the human heart. Only God can do that.
- When we try to operate without Gods perspective, we think we have the right to do anything we want with our body, but God says we are not our own. Our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, and we were bought with a price. We are fearfully and wonderfully made by God. Now that gives us cause to pause, doesnt it?
- The world says the way to success is to be strong and self-sufficient, accumulate wealth, and do whatever it takes to climb to the top of the heap. But God says he uses the weak things to confound the wise. He calls us to lean on him, and he will lift us up.
- The world says the beautiful people are the happy people, but God says true beauty comes not from radical makeovers that fade in time but from radical heart surgery that endures forever. This kind of transformation in our desires will reflect in our outer appearance and will fill us with a joy and beauty that radiates to the rest of the world and will not fade.
So the good news is that Gods ways are not our ways, and he gives us all the tools we need to live right side up in this upside-down world. You will be equipped to make the changes you have desired.
As you read through the pages of this book, you will be encouraged and enlightened by the life-changing experiences of those who have courageously traveled this path.
We invite you as fellow sojourners to join us on this exciting journey. We can promise that you will find victory and a sense of well-being by addressing your Hunger Within and doing it Gods way.
In the love of Christ,
Arthur and Judy Halliday

Hunger is a universal experience. Television, newspapers, and magazines bring wide-eyed and sunken-cheeked faces of starving people around the world into our homes and our hearts, and we are grieved. Yet even those of us fortunate enough to have an abundance of food are hungry. We sit down three times a day to tables laden with food, but our deepest hunger is not satisfied.
Each of us has a hunger deep within where no one can see. And although it may not be obvious, this hunger is the most universal of all. It is the silent hunger within an unfulfilled soul, which has been muted by years of behavior designed to still its voice and prevent it from being heard.
But this hunger within cannot be completely silenced. It cries out to be heard and struggles to express our deepest yearnings to be loved, protected, and considered precious. It is a God-given hunger for an authentic relationship wherein our deepest needs for security and significance can be substantially met.
Unfortunately, when these needs are not met, we may turn to food, drugs, alcohol, work, gambling, pornography, or other compulsions in an attempt to fill the void. But if the bad news is that our attempts to satisfy this hunger on our own have failed, the good news is that God has already provided the path to a life of satisfaction, eternal fulfillment, and freedom. You may wonder how this is possible, but Scripture tells us, With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible (Matt. 19:26).
