A model of evangelistic preaching! Highly recommended!
Michael Eaton, Chrisco Central Church, Nairobi, Kenya
The message of Isaiah 53 is unpacked with a new freshness, and sets forth the glory of Jesus Christ in His humiliation and His exaltation. His salvation is presented in compelling terms and the reader is continually challenged to a personal response throughout.
S. John Dixon, Minister-Emeritus, 1st Antrim Presbyterian Church, and Former Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ireland
This is the most important question to ask, and here is the most insightful and inspirational answer I have ever read.
Canon J. John
RT is blessed with a distinctive, almost unique, skill to take Scripture in all its majesty and interpret it to us right where we live. Now he turns his attention to the sublime Isaiah 53. You will be stirred, edified and strengthened by his insights, love for truth and ability to feed your soul.
Terry Virgo, Newfrontiers
RT writes as he is. The man always comes through in his message, which is full of careful, logical, investigative exploration of the text and all that lies around it. His love of the land of Israel only serves to amplify his love of scripture. The combination is powerful eye-opening, and at times positively breath-taking.
This is a book to stir your heart, engage your brain and bring to you ever more clearly the wonder of this Jesus - the person to whom RT has surrendered his life, and devoted his years.
Seat belts will need to be adjusted for this ride. Its a rollercoaster excursion into the heart of God and the love He expressed in Jesus.
Dr Clive Calver, Walnut Hill Community Church, Bethel, CT
RT has done it again! In an age when the true nature of the Gospel is being seriously questioned, RT takes us back to biblical basics. This is a masterly and deeply inspiring exposition.

I N M EMORY OF C HARLIE S TRIDE (19292006)
Preface
This book is an edited version of my twelve sermons on Isaiah 53. I first preached them at Westminster Chapel between January and March in 1986. When people ask me how I manage to write so many books, my answer partly is that a good number of them are based on sermons I have preached in Westminster Chapel, London. In my twenty-five years there I preached approximately three and a half thousand times! Many of these sermons remain unpublished. Only God knows if they will be useful in the future. Tony Collins, publisher of Monarch Books, asked to print these sermons on Isaiah 53, and he suggested the title: Why Jesus Died.
I thank Beryl Grogan, my former secretary at the Chapel, for carefully and painstakingly typing every word of the original sermons from a tape recorder. From these, I was able to produce the book you hold in your hands. My successor, Greg Haslam, has graciously allowed Beryl to do a few things for me since our retirement in February 2002.
This is my first book with Monarch. It has been a pleasure to reunite with Tony Collins. When Tony was an editor with Hodder & Stoughton several years ago during our early days at the Chapel he helped with a number of my books. I wish to thank yet another former Hodder editor, David Moloney, who has kindly done the final editing of the present book.
I am dedicating Why Jesus Died to the memory of Charlie Stride, the London taxi driver who became one of our most popular and faithful members in Westminster Chapel. Of the countless people who professed faith in Christ from the efforts of our Pilot Lights ministry witnessing in the streets between Buckingham Palace and Victoria Charlies conversion was one of the most memorable. He became not only a member of the Chapel but was one of our most involved with the young and old and everybody in between. Everybody loved Charlie. He went to Heaven since our retirement and I look forward to meeting him there one day.
May God use this book to draw many to Christ, and I pray it will be a blessing to you.

Foreword
In an informal survey, one hundred Jews on the streets of Tel Aviv were asked: Who do you think the fifty-third chapter of Isaiah describes? Most were unfamiliar with the passage and were asked to read it before answering. After doing so, many conceded that they did not know to whom it referred, but some thought it sounded a lot like Jesus.
In my estimation, when it comes to making the case for Jesus, Isaiah 53 is the one chapter in the Hebrew Scriptures that stands above all others. And when it comes to excellent expositors of the word of God, I cant think of but a handful that could unpack it with such skill and biblical insight as Dr R. T. Kendall. What a great pairing!
I was not disappointed. As I read through these twelve chapters of Why Jesus Died I discovered a treasure trove of biblical gems and practical applications for both the student of the Bible as well as the seeker.
Actually, I wish this book had been around when I, as a Jew, was on my journey to faith in Jesus many years ago. I would have resonated with the clear-thinking presentation style and the wonderful illustrations that make this passage so relevant today. While Dr Kendall is quick to point out that the seeker of Gods truth needs the illumination of the Holy Spirit to see Jesus as the pierced one of Isaiah 53:6, the evidence he presents is powerful. The suffering servant of Isaiahs Gospel is indeed the Jesus who died at Calvary. If you have not come to that conclusion, I encourage you to read on with a heart open and ready to hear from God.
