Pain is the touchstone of all spiritual growth.

Physical. Emotional. Mental. Spiritual. Pain comes in many forms, diligently avoided by most of us, even at the risk of sacrificing the quality of our lives. But pain canand shouldbe a catalyst for change, a doorway through which we travel on our journey from suffering to joy.

In The Gift of Pain, author Barbara Altemus links her personal journey of discovery with parallel experiences of world-renowned visionaries, artists, healers, and peacemakers to explore and understand the nature of pain. By drawing on themes of painfailure, loss, addiction, lack of community, and loss of homeland, among othersthese contributors share their intensely personal times of darkness and how these experiences ultimately lead to spiritual awakening and even joy.

For my precious daughter, Imani
An Elders Words
In a dream, I listened as a wise man spoke
of the need for the people of the world to
transform their consciousness.
For he explained that we are living in the illusion
of being separate from one another, from all of natural creation,
and from our Creator.

He went on to share of
the pain that we carry within our hearts and souls
and how this pain serves to remind us
that we are out of alignment with the universal laws
placed here to guide us
and how we have forgotten
our true purposes in life.

Not understanding how to move through our pain
into joy
all too often we have inflicted more suffering upon ourselves,
our children, our mates, our communities, our nations
and the water, earth, air and other living beings,
pulling them into our own dance of demise.
He cried out softly, saying
listen with your hearts
for we are one global heart.
Become the beauty, peace, love and harmony
that you so long for in others.
Remember that it is in the silence of the mind,
the roaring of the wind,
the incessant rhythm of the waters
and the song of the birds
that we are reminded that
life is perfect.
You are perfect.

Move into your authentic selves.
Shine the radiance of pure love upon all those whom you meet
for there are infinite possibilities in this grand mystery
we call life.
Reach out for the calling.
Become the human being you have always been
and give your soul permission to soar.
For this life as it is given to us
is the most precious gift of all.

Move into the consciousness of caring for the sacred.

Acknowledgments
Writing this book has given me the opportunity to heal and transform my life in ways that I could have never imagined. There are numerous remarkable people who have helped to make this book possible, and many others who through their presence and support have anchored me along the way.
First I want to thank my daughter, Imani, who inspires me endlessly with her refreshing wisdom, sense of humor, open and loving heart, spirited nature, and adventurous outlook on life. You were so enthusiastic about traveling with me and meeting the contributors in the book, and we shared the most amazing of times together. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for putting up with my endless hours of writing and editingespecially toward the completion of the book. When I became weary, I would peek in at you sleeping and be reminded that all is well, and that I am here doing what I am meant to do. In your own special way you always bring me back to my true self. Thank you for all of your love and support. You are the angel in my life.
I want to give a heartfelt thanks to my extraordinary brother, David. You have supported me in so many ways, but most of all by believing in me and lovingly standing by my side. Without your help, this book would have never been the same. You are the brother that every sister wishes for.
To my dear friend Miriam Lynette, thank you for consistently supporting me with your love, wisdom, and expertise. You are an editor extraordinaire, and this book sings louder and clearer than it ever could have without your help. It has been wonderful working with you.

My dear friend Gay, thank you for loving me and insisting that we go to an IBI preview. If I had not gone, I would have never heard Bernies message for me to write the book. I know you are smiling down upon us as this book comes to completion.
My beautiful sister Rose, thank you for always believing in me, sharing your loving spirit, and guiding me on this path.
To my literary agent, Roger Jellinek, you are a gift from the heavens. You have always stood by me, believed in me, and guided me in the direction I needed to go. My very deepest thanks for taking me by the hand and showing me the way to becoming a published author.
