This book is dedicated to my wife Thea. She has allowed me to lead our home now for thirty-five years. Thanks Honey!
The call to leadership is an awesome responsibility and honor. You have been chosen by God to guide those that are under your leadership into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. Yes, this is the ultimate purpose of your call. It is an honor and privilege to be chosen to lead others and that honor has been given to you. Your call is no different than the call of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, and Isaiah. God is the one that has called you into this position of leadership. It is God, through Jesus Christ, that will call you from labor to reward for a job well done. (Matthew 25:23; Romans 2:16)
The two overarching questions we are going to examine are: What is the call of leadership? and How is the call of leadership confirmed? These exciting questions will be the fuel for our discussion.
A leader is a role model for others to follow. A leader is a road map (incarnate), which helps others to get to their destination. While no leader is qualified to lead, a leader is given the authority to lead by virtue of Him that has called. This simply means that we can take no credit for the call to leadership. It is a gift! Neither your education nor your pedigree makes you qualified to lead Gods people. You have not been called to leadership because you have a charismatic personality, good looks, or can speak well. The question then is, Why has God chosen you to be a leader? The answer is found in Genesis 6:8. Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.
Gods call to leadership is a grace call. God has bestowed on you a special grace that enables you to fill a leadership slot. It really has nothing to do with you as much as you would think. (Luke 17:10) The grace given to be a leader over looks our inadequacies. (Isaiah 6:5) Nobody is called to lead because they are adequate. Everybody in a leadership role serves only because of the grace or favor of God.
The next question is, Why were you given such a favor? Whenever you see the word grace or favor in the Bible, you must understand that it comes without explanation. God does not explain to us why he pours out his grace or favor. (Ephesians 2:8,9) Grace cannot be fathomed!
If you are the recipient of grace, the most that you can do is to receive it and say thank you. (I Corinthians 15:10) A true leader is humbled by the call of God to serve Him in a leadership role. They take to heart their responsibility to lead. The responsibility to lead comes from the ability that God gives to you to respond to His call. Leaders are empowered by Gods grace. A leader leads through the power they draw from Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 6:10)
While your Pastor through the laying on of hands confirms the call to leadership, the call to leadership is prenatal. (Jeremiah 1:5) God selected you to leadership before you were formed in your mothers womb. Wow! Yes, you are special! Yes, you are all that and a bag of chips! Why? God has always had you on His mind! (Job 7:17; Psalms 8:4) You have been born to do something special for the Lord. This honor and responsibility are the make-up of your call.
We honor you just for the calling upon your life. (Romans 13:7) You have said yes to the will of God for your life. (Isaiah 6:8) Like the Apostle Paul, be bold and thankful for the call to duty. (I Timothy 1:12) Because of you, we give thanks to God!
In the life of the church, the call to leadership does not happen in a vacuum. The Holy Spirit confirms the call of every leader through pastoral leadership. (Acts 13:2,3; II Timothy 1:6) Not only does the pastor of the local church confirm the call of all the leaders under him, but he also is responsible to equip them for their service. (Ephesians 4:12-16)
The age-old question is, Are leaders born or made? The answer is both. The pastor through the power of the Holy Spirit will confirm your call to leadership, but he will also prepare you for leadership. This means that you are on the team by his recognition, but that doesnt mean you will play in the game. This is important because you will need to exercise patience. You will be saying in your heart, Put me in the game! The pastor may not put you in the game. He may say to you, Youre going to sit this one out! Can you handle that? I will never forget the decision of the coach of Gene Banks to have him benched during the All Public city basketball game in 1977 for violating the teams rules. Here the coach sits down the team leader. Always remember that the pastor confirms you. You do not confirm the pastor! His confirmation for you must be continuous. Rogue leaders in the church can be benched! Count it an honor that you have been selected by God and confirmed by your pastor.
Core values are strong beliefs that are the building blocks of character. Your character is the person that you are. Core values are shaped by ones environment. We adopt our core values by exposure. Our senses are the gates by which we potentially choose our core values. Yes, core values are a choice! You and I decide the program that will run our lives. The program we choose will run on autopilot until we change the program. Understanding this truth will empower you to take control of your life! Like a menu given to us in a restaurant, we get to choose our core values from a list of potential possibilities.
The very first Psalms details for us the blessing of drawing our core values from the Law of the Lord. However the law of God was not the only choice that was given in the text. Following the counsel of the ungodly, standing in the company of sinners, and harboring feelings of superiority are alternative core values. Ungodly counsel is any instruction that is opposed to the word and will of the Lord. Most of the philosophies that have taken hold of our culture is ungodly. Same sex marriage is one of the hottest topics going now days. The legal system is crumbling under the satanic pressure to destroy the biblical institution of marriage. At the foundation of a biblical marriage is a man and woman. If you put together anything other than a man and a woman you dont have a marriage but an abomination to God. Homosexuality is an abomination to God because it goes against nature or what is natural. (Romans, chapter 1) It is at direct opposition to the truth! Having said what we have said puts us at war with the legal system, which is under the counsel or guidance from the demonic realm. Satan is a liar and the father of lies. He cannot tell the truth! (St. John 8:44) As a result, our culture and legal system are being influenced by the devil, who is a liar.
The devil says that which is defiant to the truth. He says It is alright for a man to have a sexual relationship with another man. It is okay for a woman to have a sexual relationship with another woman. In fact it is natural. Yet, when Paul writes to the church in Rome, he tells them that man exchanged the truth of God for a lie. What followed was sexual perversion!
