Introduction
When I set out to write Demystifying Success , I wanted to provide young adults (ages 16 to 25) with the needed tools, techniques, and personal/financial guidelines to help them grow success on their own terms. I also wanted to help educate anyone else who never really learned these important lessons from an early age. I knew I wanted to design this book to be practical and straightforward so you could immediately jump in, reach your goals, and achieve success as soon as possible. As such, I chose to candidly share personal stories of my own failures and successes to help you avoid the very same pitfalls which have prevented so many others from achieving their ultimate life-long success.
Sadly, the majority of the information and educational concepts shared in this book are currently not being taught in most U.S. high schools and colleges. Honestly, I find it shocking that for a country that prides itself on its technological and educational advances, most of its population is financially illiterateand through no fault of their own. How can parents and teachers be expected to educate young adults when they themselves are lacking this very same knowledge? The answer is they cant. And as a result, more and more young adults are now entering the real world financially illiterate and ill-prepared to achieve their future success. To help do my part, I felt inspired to write this book because I am passionate and dedicated toward helping others break the generational cycle of financial illiteracy.
We, as a society, have been negligent in helping to prepare our young adults for their future success. I believe it is now our obligation to begin the long-overdue process of educating future generations, like yourself, with solid personal and financial foundations. These crucial life skills include personal finance, strategic decision-making, goal-setting, plan implementation, and evaluationtools that are necessary for our society to continue to compete and thrive in our ever-changing global economy. The need for these life skills to be understood and incorporated into daily lives is clearly evident by the financial turmoil experienced by more and more adults between the ages of 40 to 60. This group in particular suffers from a national epidemic that I refer to as, financial obesityones obsessive and self-sabotaging need to constantly overspend and remain financially unhealthy. In fact, since 2008, one can rarely open up a newspaper, go online, or turn on a TV without reading or hearing about the growing economic concerns regarding the lack of wealth and employment in this country.
In case you get the urge to beat yourself up for something that might not be within your controlstop and realize that you have now chosen to read this book because you want to change your path and create the successful life you desire. If you feel bad or ashamed about lacking these skillsdont! When I graduated high school and college, I still didnt know these important tips and secrets either. I had to discover many of these concepts on my own because either no one around me knew them, or they chose not to let me in on their secrets. Whatever the reason, I had to learn my lessons the hard way. Because on top of my basic lack of confidence and insecurities at that time, I was also too nave to know what questions I should have been asking to help improve my future. So back in 1992, after plenty of personal failures and successes, I took it upon myself to finally figure out, and break down, how successful people earned and cultivated their wealth. And since I wished I was privy to these secrets back when I was your age, I consider it a privilege to be able to share and demystify them with you now.
So, who am I, Larry M. Jacobson, to be a groundbreaking authority on success? And why should you bother to listen to what I have to say on the subject? Well, to help give you some perspective, my personal successes include:
