FOREWORD
AS A PSYCHIATRIST AND MENTAL HEALTH EXPERT, I have spent many years talking to people about their struggles with depression and anxiety as well as a variety of other illnesses. Identifying the stressors with which one is dealing is a routine part of any mental health assessment. One of the most common and particularly problematic stressors is financial stress. The constant worry about paying for rent, utilities, and the kids school supplies often leads to feelings of hopelessness and helplessness. These difficult feelings can impair one to the point of complacency and resignation to a life of financial struggle.
If you are reading this book, this probably sounds all too familiar. You may be thinking, Yeah, thats me, but how do I get out of this? You may say to yourself, I just need to make more money to make ends meet. While this sounds like a good (but maybe impractical) solution, the chances are that more income will not solve the problem. In this book, Buffie addresses this issue head-on. She has spent years in various financial services and is a nationally recognized financial and tax expert. Dont believe me? Well, all you have to do is look for her appearances on networks such as CNN, HLN, and CNBC. Throughout her career, Buffie has helped thousands of people with their financial needs. This has helped her develop a deep and unique understanding of the real cause for many money woesa dysfunctional relationship with money. Being married to Buffie for many years has given me the privilege of intimately witnessing the development and evolution of the Crawl Before You Ball program that helps you understand why you have money problems and what you can do about it.
Now, if all you want is a budgeting book, a guide to tell you how to add your income, subtract your expenses, balance your checkbook, or get your financial app to stop showing minus signs in front of the numbers, this may not be the book for you. But if you want to understand how you got into your financial mess, what keeps you there, and what you can do to make fundamental changes in your relationship with money, then keep reading. As a word of warning, I have seen firsthand that this program can be emotionally challenging, as it forces you to look at yourself and the behaviors that keep you in constant financial turmoil. It can be hard on you and possibly your significant others when you set the boundaries and make the necessary changes to achieve lasting success. But, if you want to make a real change, you have to understand and modify the maladaptive behaviors that keep you in constant money struggles. Crawl Before You Ball is the book that will get you there.

INTRODUCTION
IF YOU ARE SOMEONE WHO experiences relentless, gut-wrenching, paralyzing dread on the first and fifteenth of each month, I wrote this book for you. Whether your angst is derived solely from your own fiscal fuck-ups, or you are afraid to answer your phone, view text messages, or answer your front door for fear that someone you know, or love, will inundate you with their story of biweekly economic disaster, Crawl Before You Ball is for you. Most of our brains have been pre-programmed to think life equals survival, not fulfillment, not peace, and certainly not happiness. This deeply saddens me. I believe that anyone, no matter their socioeconomic status, can live a life full of joy and free from the economic stressors that cause us to be miserable for no damn reason.
I believe you can have it all as long as you and not others craft the definition of the word ALL. If someone is a financial guru, I believe theyve worked on their own monetary mental health and not by being a budgeting conformist. Again, life is for living, not only for surviving. Crawl Before You Ball is a way of truly living the life you wish to have. I believe we must crawl BEFORE we ball. There are some things in life that we have to do, and once we do them, we can do whatever the hell we desire later. Unfortunately, we are taught that delayed gratification is bad. We have been taught that instagramification is the way of the land. Everything we see, hear, smell, and taste reinforces this faux belief system, which is all by design to keep us in a constant state of helplessness.
