For Emanuel Tov and Eugene Ulrich
Preface
It is my happy duty to thank the many people who were involved in the production of this volume. I would like to thank Albrecht Dhnert for asking me to consider the project, Reinhard Kratz for accepting the volume, Sophie Wagenhofer and Aaron Overby-Sanborn for their help in shepherding the volume through the publication process, and Eleanor Beach, copy editor extraordinaire, who saved me from many errors.
I have been in dialogue with text critics around the world for many years as we wrestled with the new information in the Judean Desert texts and how to understand them and incorporate them into any history of the biblical text. First and foremost, my thanks are always to Frank Moore Cross zl, my teacher in textual criticism and mentor who involved me in the editing of the Deuteronomy manuscripts. Over the years my conversation partners have included George Brooke, Julie Ann Duncan, Russell Fuller, Ronald Hendel, Nathan Jastram, Robert Kawashima, Gerald N. Knoppers zl, Armin Lange, Bernard Levinson, Sarianna Metso, Andres Piquer-Otero, Lawrence M. Schiffman, John Strugnell zl, Shemaryahu Talmon zl, Eibert J. C. Tigchelaar, Pablo Torijano, Julio Trebolle Barrera, Ronald Troxel, Kristen de Troyer, James C. VanderKam, Benjamin G. Wright III, and Molly M. Zahn. Dan Crawford as always was ready to engage any issue, even those outside his own area of expertise; any philosophical discussion in these articles owes much to his instruction and insight.
It gives me great pleasure to dedicate this volume to my chief conversation partners over the past thirty years, Emanuel Tov and Eugene Ulrich. They have been my teachers, mentors, and collaborators, and my career would not have been possible without the warm friendship we have enjoyed over the years.
