Acknowledgements
This volume began as a doctoral thesis at Macquarie University, Sydney. I would like to thank Larry Welborn for embracing this project and generously sharing his wisdom and expertiseI really appreciate his unfailing belief and encouragement. I would also like to thank Paul McKechnie and Alanna Nobbs for their enthusiasm and support, both academic and administrative. The New Testament and Early Christianity seminar at Macquarie, coordinated by Don Barker, provided a very stimulating and collegial environment. Im also grateful for my colleagues at Morling College, and its Principal and Board for granting me sabbatical and other leave to complete this work.
A version of chapter 5 first appeared as Cyprian, Paul, and Care for the Poor and Captive: Offering Sacrifices and Ransoming Temples, Zeitschrift fr Antikes Christentum 20 (2016): 418436, and a section of chapter 4 is drawn from Widows, Welfare and the Wayward: 1Timothy 5 in Cyprians Ad Quirinum , Studia Patristica 94 (2017): 6774. In the introduction, I borrow from my argument in As Far as My Poor Memory Suggested: Cyprians Compilation of Ad Quirinum , Vigiliae Christianae 68 (2014): 533550, and material from Cyprians Use of Philippians: To Live Is Christ and to Die Is Gain, Augustinianum 56 (2016): 3556, is woven throughout the book. Other content first appeared in Edwina Murphy, Divine Ordinances and Life-Giving Remedies: Galatians in the Writings of Cyprian of Carthage, Journal of Theological Interpretation 8 (2014): 81102. I would also like to thank Albrecht Dhnert and the rest of the De Gruyter team, especially Aaron Sanborn-Overby and Sabina Dabrowski for their editorial work.
I would like to thank my parents and first teachers, Marj and Ted McMaster, for their constant love and for always believing I could do whatever I put my mind to. Thanks also to my siblings, in-laws, and nieces and nephewsIm very fortunate to be part of such a wonderful family. I would like to thank my children and favourite students, Joel and Lara, who bring so much joy to my life and from whom I am constantly learning. Most of all, I would like to thank my husband, Peter, a true partner in Christ. His steadfast and sacrificial support, example, and encouragement to keep growing have made it all possible.
Soli Deo gloria!
