I am a little pencil in the hand of a writing God who is sending a love letter to the world .
M OTHER T ERESA
I love this quote. My mom used it in a book, and I wanted to use it too. It reminds me of how small we are compared to the large and majestic God who loves us so much. And how He uses each of us in different roles to carry out His message of love to the world.
A special thank you to Laree Lindburg for your willingness to help me with this devotional. Your time and wisdom are so much appreciated.
Kudos to Harvest House Publishers for your support and dedication. In particular to Terry Glaspey, Carolyn McCready, and Gene Skinner for providing a special platform to reach young women all across America.
To Joshua Straub, Amy Feigel, and Laura Faidley for your editing, writing, research, and insightyou guys are a great help!
And to my parents. I love you both so much and wouldnt be where I am today without your faithful prayers and love for me. I can write a devotional only because of your faithfulness and commitment to raise me with the love of God. You have been living examples of what it means to be all in for God!
Contents
I ve been thinking about you a lot latelyyes, really.
I have tried to imagine what you look like, how you feel about yourself, and where you live. Mostly I have been wondering about whats been on your heart lately. The stuff you think about when no one else is around.
Have you ever wondered at times about Godwho He is, whether He really knows you and loves you, how He wants you to respond to difficult life situations, and if He is disappointed in you or simply there for you?
When you listen to people speak about God and life, everyone has an opinion, but real answers seem hard to come by.
As you read, I want you to know that God loves you, and I believe He has a dream for your life. The Bible even says He is wild about you. I really like that. I wrote this devotional because I want you to know that regardless of the situation you find yourself in, God is there in the middle of it all and promises to see you through.
As for me, I am just crazy enough to believe that if you will search and reach for Him, if you will press in close to Him, you will find Him, and He will be your rock, your strong tower.
Warmly,
Above All Names
God said to Moses, I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you.
E XODUS 3:14
D id you know that the Bible includes more than 100 names for God? And that doesnt even count the variations to these names! Whew!
Another bit of triviaHow many words do you think are in the English language?
50,000?
75,000?
100,000?
Try 171, 476! Plus another 47,156 words we dont really use. Thats getting close to a quarter of a million words in the English language! But out of all the words in the English language, one will always stand out above all the rest: God !
Lets take a look at a few of the many names of our one God:
Jehovah I Am. One who always exists, eternal and unchangeable.
El-ShaddaiGod Almighty
Adonai Lord, our master and owner
Jehovah-jireh Jehovah will provide
Jehovah-rophe Jehovah heals
Jehovah-nissi Jehovah, my banner
Jehovah-MKaddesh Jehovah, who sanctifies (forgives)
Jehovah-shalom Jehovah, our peace
Jehovah-tsidekenu Jehovah, our righteousness
Jehovah-rohi Jehovah, my Shepherd
Jehovah-shammah Jehovah is there
By learning the names of God, we get to know a little more about His character. Studying the original usage of Gods names is helpful because today the words God or Lord mean simply supreme being or sovereign of the universe. Thats great, but God is so much more!
I dont know about you, but reading the names of God gives me joy! When I am scared, thinking about the names Jehovah-shalom and Jehovah-shammah makes me feel safe. When Im worried or nervous, the names Jehovah-jireh and Jehovah-rohi remind me of Gods care.
When my heart is broken or a family member has a terrible illness, the name Jehovah-rophe reassures me that regardless of what happens, God will heal in the way He thinks is best. And during crazy, unpredictable times in our world, just the name Jehovah fills me with comfort. He has always existed, He is eternal, and He is unchangeable. I love that, especially when something major seems to be shifting in our world every day. God doesnt budge.
His love for us does not change either, and that is very cool. Even when we are unfaithful to Him, He will stay faithful to His wordand to us.
By calling Himself I Am, God assures us that He has always been. He is righteousness, peace, our Shepherd, the one who is there. Hes the King of kings and Lord of lords. He is our Prince of Peace, our Mighty God and Everlasting Father. His name is above all namesthats our God!
Whats a Girl to Do?
Try to use Gods names in your everyday life, like when you pray. The names are straight from the Bible, so you can use them to talk to God. When you think of the Lord or talk about Him, remember these descriptions of who He is. They will not only help you in tough times but also help others as well. I challenge you to pray using another one of Gods names this week.
All in with God
Father, thank You for giving me Your names. Now that I have read these titles, I feel I know You even better. Help me to understand more and more aspects of Your character, Lord. I love You and trust You. In Jesus name, amen.
Step One
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
J OHN 3:16 NASB
I want to share with you the reason I wrote this little book. If you take only one thing from the entire book, please let it be the words in this devotion. I hope they will help you make the most important decision you will ever make on this earth.
