Missionary Strategies in the New World 16101690 The study is an intellectual - photo 1
Missionary Strategies in the New World, 16101690
The study is an intellectual and comparative history of French, Spanish, and English missions to the native peoples of America in the seventeenth century, c. 16101690. It shows that missions are ideal case studies to properly understand the relationship between religion and politics in early modern Catholic and Calvinist thought.
The book aims to analyse the intellectual roots of fundamental ideas in Catholic and Calvinist missionary writingsamong others idolatry, conversion, civility, and policeby examining the classical, Augustinian, neo-Thomist, Reformed Protestant, and contemporary European influences on their writings. Missionaries insistence on the necessity of reform, emphasising an experiential, practical vision of Christianity, led them to elaborate conversion strategies that encompassed not only religious but also political and social changes. It was at the margins of empire that the essentials of Calvinist and Catholic soteriologies and political thought could be enacted and crystallised. By a careful analysis of these missiologies, the study thus argues that missionaries common strategieshabituation, segregation, and social and political regulationsstem from a shared intellectual heritage that is classical, humanist, and above all concerned with the Erasmian ideal of a reformation of manners.
Catherine Ballriaux has studied philosophy, American studies and history at the Universities of Lige and Antwerp, Belgium and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She holds a PhD in history from the University of Auckland, New Zealand. She is currently a research associate at the Interdisciplinary Centre for European Enlightenment Studies (IZEA), Martin-Luther-Universitt Halle-Wittenberg.

I never would have been able to write this study without the help and support of Jonathan Scott. He has been a wonderful mentor and teacher, and his unfailing support in times of crisis has been invaluable. He has given me the skills and confidence that I lacked to accomplish this project, and for that I am deeply grateful. Joseph Zizek has also been an amazing support. His historiographical knowledge, detailed comments on early drafts, and unwavering kindness have been an inestimable help.
I spent the last eighteen months at the Lichtenberg-Kolleg, the University of Gttingen Institute for Advanced Study. My time there has been incredibly rewarding, at the personal as well as the professional level, and I am deeply indebted to the director, Martin van Gelderen, as well as the staff, most of all Dominik Hnniger and Kora Baumbach, for having made this stay wonderful in so many ways. I am grateful to the Enlightenment group and to the other fellows at the Kolleg for the very rich conversations. Thanks in particular to Mark Hutchinson for sharing my obsession with grace and for being such an amazing friend.
