Change the Way You Move...
and Change Your Life
We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.
from Little Gidding by T. S. Eliot
Is your life the way you want it to be? Are you the person you want to be, the person youre certain you can be, the person you know you really are inside? Since youre reading a book about how to transform yourself and your life, Im going to guess that the answer is no.
Something is off-center for you. Maybe its your job, your relationship, or your lack of a relationship. Perhaps your days are filled with the shoulds and should nots of obligation, leaving no time for the want tos of pleasure and desire. Maybe you sense that youre not succeeding in your life or your career as you had hoped to, as you know you couldif only things were different. You feel frustrated, pressured, encumbered, and adrift.
Dont look now, but it showsin every move you make.
I mean that quite literally. The way you stand, sit, walk, and hold yourself all reflect your inner life. Its the bodymind connectionthe link between the way you feel and your physical state. Because of that link, your thoughts and emotions program themselves into the way you move your body. Youve seen it in othersthe drooping shoulders of someone whos dejected, the briskly upright walk of someone whos happy or successful, the careless seated posture of someone with low self-esteem. And you see it in yourself: When youre under stress, the tension goes right to the back of your neck or into your shoulders; when youre worried, your jaw locks; and anger tightens your abdominal muscles until you feel that you can hardly breathe. In fact, the way you move sends all sorts of messages about your feelings and gives all kinds of clues about your sense of selfand you can read your life in every move you make.
