PREFACE
I have had a blessed life, thanks to this amazing Savior you are about to read about. It hasnt always been an easy life. It hasnt all been smooth sailing. But my Savior has walked with me through every day, ever since I met Him way back when I was eleven in a little place called Sweet Home Community in rural Texas. Since that day Ive enjoyed His blessings. He has given me so much, and I want to tell you all about what Hes done for me.
If you dont know Him, you should. And you can. Just read on.
In these pages youll find a collection of sermons that Ive delivered over the years. They all center around this wonderful Savior, Jesus. And together they all paint a picture of our glorious Lord.
I believe youll find this book easy to read and easy to understand. But, Id ask you not to try to read it all in one sitting. Instead, as you read one chapter at a time, take a few moments to reflect on the truths youve read. Youll get the most out of it if you stop frequently and consider your own journey as you read about mine.
So, as I invite you to listen to my story of my journey with Jesus, Id like you to reflect on a very special truth. It comes from the lips of this loving Savior, spoken to a crowd of people 2000 years ago. It is, in fact, an invitation to know Him as your own Savior, One who offers rest and peace and comfort:
Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden,
and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you,
and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart,
and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
(Matthew 11:2830)
FOREWORD
W e sat spellbound as Dr. E. V. Hill tossed books, one after the other, out into the waiting congregation of students, faculty, and staff. In his inimitable, powerful preaching style he punctuated the words of his sermon with this picture lesson of how Christ bestows unexpected blessings on His children. He often just says, Here! Take this!and He blesses us again and again, not because of our faithfulness, but because He is the Supreme Giver.
Well, needless to say, this message entitled What Do You Have When You Have Jesus? has gone down in the annals of Moody Bible Institute Founders Week history as one of the most memorable, challenging and classic messages of all time. A Savior Worth Having includes this message and many others. Dr. Hill argues without apology that our Savior is above all others, He is Supreme, all-sufficient, a restorer of the soul, and singularly able to save.
What a joy it is to know thatin these tumultuous, changing timeswhen standards are changing as quickly as they are establishedthere is One who changes not! I enthusiastically concur with Dr. Hill that our Christ is undeniably A Savior Worth Having!

Chapter One
NO OTHER NAME
And when they had set them in the midst, they asked,
By what power or by what name, have ye done this?Acts 4:7
Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel,
that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,
whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead,
even by him doth this man stand here before you well. Acts 4:10
Neither is there salvation in any other; for there is
no other name under heaven given among men,
whereby we must be saved. Acts 4:12
W hats in a name?
Of all the names on earth today, one name is more powerful than any other. Christians know it has the power to change lives, save lost souls, heal sick bodies, and secure eternity. It is the name of our beloved Savior, Jesus.
I was reared in a log cabin; Momma and I came up together. Papa passed on when I was eleven. Momma and I battled through. Then Momma passed on, and every so often when I am privileged to speak in one of the great venues of Christendom, I ask the Lord, Lord, let Momma see me here! (I realize theologically its not quite possiblebut I didnt go to seminary, so I can take this liberty.)
WHEREVER YOU GO,
NO MATTER WHAT CLASS
WHETHER ITS POLITICIANS,
SEMINARIANS, PROFESSORS,
TEACHERS, OR EVEN WITH
PEOPLE WHOSE HOMES
ARE BREAKING UP
THE HEARTS PLEA IS,
I NEED A SAVIOR.
One of the great thrills of my life was preaching in Moscow several years agojust a couple of blocks from Lenins Tomb, in the heart of Moscow. I was speaking to about 6,000 preachers (I suspect old Lenin was turning over in his grave) about this wonderful Jesus. For now, even in Moscow, the name of Jesus can be publicly spoken. Who would have thought four or five or ten years ago that the name Jesus could be uttered freely on the streets of the former Soviet Union? Tragically, while in Russian public schools He can be read about and discussed freely, in our own public schools, it is forbidden to speak His name.
