From Reviews:

...In this book the clinical psychologist Natius Oelofsen describes the processes of learning and the three-step reflective cycle, explaining how keeping a reflective journal offers insights into self and behaviour, and using critical analysis to reflect on even ordinary, everyday incidents.
He shows how the insights of understanding help our interactions with patients and colleagues. Reflection helps us work together, offer support and see where we are able to fit in as team members. The chapter All for one and one for all: building supportive teams is particularly illuminating.
There is so much in this book, including getting the most from supervision, ethical issues and dealing with work-based stress, as well as exercises, activities and case examples.Nursing Standard, Vol. 26, No. 48, August 2012

Developing Reflective Practice is a thorough and concise book enabling students, qualified nurses and any other health professional to become confident reflective practitioners within their own field.... A well-written and educational tool particularly for a nursing student and even a social work student.

This book is dedicated to two very special people in my life:
My father, Willem Oelofsen (19362011) who taught me so much about life and what is really important; and Eucharia, my wife, who is my constant inspiration.
CONTENTS
PREFACE
The idea for this book emerged from a series of structured, topic-based reflective practice sessions that I was invited to facilitate in various organisations over the last four years. The monthly groups were run for staff who worked in settings as diverse as a childrens home, a nursery, Sure Start childrens centres, and a team who provided intensive input to multi-problem families. Although the settings were diverse and participants had a wide range of qualifications, the groups all responded well to a very consistent set of session topics. This alerted me to the need of practitioners who work with vulnerable people in a range of settings to develop a conceptual understanding of the psychological processes which they are likely to encounter during the course of their work. Feedback from participants informed the choice of topics that were covered in these groups and this is also reflected in the chapter topics of this book.
Group sessions were also designed to enable participants to reflect on the impact of the issues at hand or the session topic on themselves and their own practice. Exercises were designed to foster experiential learning and group problem solving with the ultimate aim of improving practice. This approach was also followed when reflective activities were developed for this book.
Developing reflective practice in frontline settings involves several key players. First of all there are individual practitioners who need to be open to learn new concepts and ideas, reflect how these apply to themselves and their practice, and how they can improve the quality of their own work as a result. Managers within services are important as they are the catalysts for developing reflective teams. In particular, their openness to questions about accepted ways of doing things is a crucial factor in determining whether or not reflection can lead to positive change. Finally, organisations are only able to benefit from reflective practitioners and reflective teams once pathways for constructive feedback are created and allowed to influence organisational culture and practice. In the original reflective practice groups referred to above, the groups and I spent much time reflecting on how their insights into their own practices could be used within supervision and through other routes to influence and foster team and organisation-based change. Many of the following chapters include reflective activities that were designed to help practitioners reflect on organisational factors that influence their practice and also consider ways in which to influence practice for the better.
This book was written in the hope that making the material that others found helpful more widely available may enable large numbers of practitioners in frontline settings to become more reflective. But the ultimate aim of reflective practice is always to improve practice, and therefore it is my sincere hope that this book will become a useful tool to help frontline services improve the quality of what they offer to those who are vulnerable in our society.
