Veola Vazquez
This book is dedicated to my husband, my sons, and my many ethnically and culturally diverse family members. You each challenge me in your own ways and spur me on to love and good works.
Joshua Knabb
This book is dedicated to my wife, Adrienne, and children, Emory and Rowan, who motivate me on a moment-by-moment basis to love like Jesus loves.
Charles Lee-Johnson
This book is dedicated to my amazing daughter, Chacity, whose fight for life in her battle against lupus, kidney failure, and chronic illness inspires and encourages me to express the fullness of the gifts, vision, and love that God has deposited within my spirit. Your fight for life, passion for our people and justice, and commitment to the Lord motivate me to go harder in everything I do.
Krystal Hays
This book is dedicated to my husband, children, and extended family, who have guided and inspired me to live out my God-given calling and purpose, even when its hard.
Acknowledgments
VEOLA VAZQUEZ
I would like to thank my husband, Carlos, for his ongoing support and love and for the way he challenges me to think deeply and seek Christ daily. I would also like to thank my sons, Luke and Mark, for the joy and laughter they bring into my life and for regularly reminding me to slow down and connect. Thank you also to my coauthors, Joshua Knabb, Charles Lee-Johnson, and Krystal Hays, for your boldness and encouragement throughout this journey of developing the HEAL model. Thank you also to our editor, Jon Boyd, for his support and championing of this project. I also want to acknowledge my students who regularly kindle reminders to remain humble, listen deeply, and grow. Above all, I thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for his faithfulness to patiently teach me and shine light into new areas of my life. He is faithful to stimulate new life in areas that appear barren.
JOSHUA KNABB
First, I would like to thank my wise, talented coauthors, Drs. Veola Vazquez, Charles Lee-Johnson, and Krystal Hays, who have served as reliable traveling companions over the last few years as we humbly attempt to have Christlike conversations on race. Second, I would like to offer appreciation to Jon Boyd at InterVarsity Press, who believed in and enthusiastically supported this project from the moment he first heard about it. Third, I would like to acknowledge the anonymous reviewers, who offered thoughtful comments in order to strengthen earlier drafts of the manuscript. Fourth, I would like to thank the many students in the Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) and Doctor of Social Work (DSW) programs at California Baptist University who participated in HEAL events over the last few years and offered helpful feedback as they interacted with and experienced firsthand the HEAL model. Fifth, I would like to acknowledge the dean for the College of Behavioral and Social Science at CBU, Dr. Jacqueline Gustafson, who generously provided her leadership and support as we planned and implemented HEAL trainings and steadily wrote the book. Finally, I would like to thank the head of the body, Jesus Christ, who perfectly modeled humility, empathy, acceptance, and love as he fulfilled his earthly mission of reconciliation.
CHARLES LEE-JOHNSON

KRYSTAL HAYS
I first want to give thanks and praise to God for choosing me to do his work. I need to acknowledge the generations of Black people who came before me and paved the way for my accomplishments. I am grateful to my forebears, many of whom were enslaved and denied the right to their full humanity and dignity. They suffered and sacrificed that I might have the privilege to pursue my dreams. I would also like to thank my husband, Maurice, and children Natalie, Nathaniel, and William, for their love and support. Additionally, I appreciate the inspiration I receive from my social worker community, which seeks justice and equity for the marginalized. Im grateful to my professional family at California Baptist University and my spiritual church family for allowing me to do life among like-minded believers. I would also like to thank my coauthors for bringing me along on this journey of discovery and healing.
