When we consider our health, we tend to consider only the physical aspects. Am I eating the right foods? Am I exercising enough? But the body is only one facet of our being. What about our spiritual health? We operate as a whole, with all parts connected: body, mind and spirit. Each part is essential to and affected by the others. If a spot on an apple is left to rot, does it not eventually spoil the whole fruit? We must focus on developing ourselves in totality rather than compartmentally. As we are mindful of how we eat and exercise, we must also be mindful of how we think and what we believe.

Often, we fail to realize that when we open ourselves up physically, our minds are prepared to follow. Think about itafter a workout, its fair to say that we get an overall sense of wellbeing and accomplishment. We just feel good! In terms of spirituality, it makes perfect sense that as we open ourselves up physically and connect to the vessel that God has given us (our body), we naturally begin to feel a connection to all of Gods work. Its as though the connection with God becomes more tangible.

During my career in the NFL, Ive seen some of the worlds most physically gifted athletes lose their careers due to a lack of strong moral character. Ive also seen some of the most devout spiritual leaders jeopardize themselves because they were physically unfit. PrayFit focuses on the importance of a balanced lifea life committed to both physical and spiritual nourishment, and one that flourishes when faith and fitness intersect.

I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that this life is not about the body (and arent we glad for that?). As C. S Lewis said, You dont have a soul. You are a soul. You have a body. Im so thankful that someday Ill turn this body in for a brand-new one. But in the short termduring my time in this temporary homeIve been called to a lifetime commitment of greater health and wellness. Not just so I can feel great and have more energy, which are all benefits from exercise, but even more because I believe weve been called to a higher standard in the area of physical health.

My dad used to tell me that how I cared for the truck he gave me was an indication of how much I appreciated the gift. Keeping it clean and maintained was a way to show him love in return. And if I took care of it, I could extend its life and improve its efficiency. I think in some way the same can be said about how God has gifted us with our bodies. How well we take care of them can, in some ways, be a means to show our love in return. Our efforts to maintain healthy habits are a way of saying, Thank You, God, for life, for ability, for opportunity and for the air in my lungs, because its You who breathed it there in the first place. Im going to live my life to the fullest, in Jesus name.
