Id like to thank three living peopleand one who has passed onin particular for helping to make this book possible. The first of the three who are still with us is my wife Linda, easily the best thing that ever happened to me, and considerably ahead of the second-best, which was moving to California in general and Los Angeles in particular. L.A. isnt what it was (nothing is what it was), but the weathers still great and theres almost nothing you cant do in and around L.A. The second person is my agent, Jodie Rhodes. Ive stated in several books that I dont think Id have a career as a writer had she not been willing to take a chance on me. She seems to know everyone in the publishing field, and in particular she knows the third person I would like to thank: Michael Pye, the publisher of New Page Books. Michael and the others at New Page were willing to take the chance that an orthodox writer could do a pretty good job of presenting a somewhat unorthodox idea. It takes courage to take a risk, especially in todays rather shaky business climate, and I thank Michael and his colleagues for the opportunity to promulgate this ideaother than posting it as one of millions of unread blogs on the Internet.
I never met John Archibald Wheeler, who was a professor of physics at Princeton University until his death in 2008. Wheeler was one of those rare individuals who was willing to look at practically everything with an open mind. In particular, Wheeler regarded physics not just as a set of laws and computational tools for understanding matter and forces, but as a discipline which could reach into other areas of human thought. Wheeler, along with Stephen Hawking, would be chief contenders for the title of best physicist never to win a Nobel Prize. Hawking is more well-known to the general public, but Wheeler is probably more influential. His thoughts and ideas have had a considerable influence in how I wrote this book. I hope that I do nothing to denigrate his memory.
Its time now to start the journey of how science and mathematics have already provided a possible explanation for why there are phenomena in the Universe that lie beyond the power of science to explain.

Preface
You might be expecting a book with the title The Paranormal Equation to start out something like this:
There is a small, nondescript building on one of the dusty unnamed roads that crisscross Area 51. Most of those who actually work in Area 51 have never seen it, and if they opened the door, they would see a bespectacled, middle-aged woman with an out-of-date computer poring over what appear to be purchase orders. If they are curious and look at these, they would find that they actually are purchase orders for the nuts-and-bolts that keep Area 51 going: office supplies, snacks and beverages, etc.
But there is a concealed elevator at the back of the room, behind the pictures of current and past American presidents so often found in government offices. That elevator leads to a top-secret subterranean laboratory, wherea team of mathematicians, physicists, and experts in linguistics are poring over a mysterious artifact obtained from the 1947 crash. This artifact appears to be some sort of lightweight plastic, yet it is stronger than titanium. It has resisted all attempts to analyze it, from the chemical tests to which it was subjected when first discovered in 1947, to the magnetic resonance imaging and gas chromatograph tests currently being performed on itwithout success.
Mysterious symbols flash across its surface, sometimes changing color and arrangement. Videos have been taken of this, and computer analysis of the videos has revealed a pattern to the symbols. It is this pattern on which the mathematicians and linguistic experts have been working. After six decades, they believe they have deciphered it. It is the Paranormal Equation, an equation relating the paranormal abilities of our speciestelepathy, ESP, and clairvoyanceto the field equations and quantum mechanics which describe the physical Universe.
Well, thats how this book might begin if it were a sciencefiction thrillerbut its not. This is certainly a book about the paranormal and about equationsand also about science, history, and science fiction, with a few of my experiences thrown in. The Paranormal Equation was the title for the book that the publisher suggested. Initially, I wasnt too enthusiastic. But after thinking about it, I realized that The Paranormal Equation was actually a pretty good descriptive title for the book, because there is a colloquial use of the term equation in American society that means balancing.
Chemists use the term equation in somewhat the same sense, in the context of a chemical reaction. A classic chemical reaction occurs when hydrochloric acid, also known as muriatic acid, is mixed with sodium hydroxide, commonly known as lye. The result of this reaction is ordinary table salt and water. The question chemists want to answer is how much hydrochloric acid should be mixed with how much sodium hydroxide in order to obtain a specific quantity of table salt. Ideally, you dont want to have any leftover hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxidenot just because it would be wasteful, but because both these chemicals are toxic and dangerous. You certainly dont want either of them in the shaker when youre putting salt on scrambled eggs or french fries.
The process of figuring out how much of each ingredient to use in order to obtain a certain quantity of table salt involves a process known as balancing a chemical equation. It is in this sense that the term equation is informally used in contemporary American society. It means a balance of sorts. Can the Republicans balance the equation for a ticket to win the 2012 Presidential election? Can a professional sports team balance the equation for working its way through to the championship? Youll hear the word
