Increased stress and traumatic events in our lives have resulted in many millions of people who suffer from insomnia, nightmares, anxiety attacks, depression, and tension headaches. ACUPRESSURE FOR EMOTIONAL HEALING offers relief at your fingertips, quickly and safely, for a wide range of emotional problems. It explains how emotional distress becomes lodged in the body as muscular tension and blocked energy, and shows how acupressure can relieve not just the resulting physical symptoms, but also their emotional source--often without the need for extensive talk therapy or medication.
Acupressure stimulates the same points used in acupuncture, but instead of needles, firm finger pressure is used on the surface of the skin. The pressure releases neurochemicals called endorphins that relieve pain. As in acupuncture, specific pressure points are connected with internal organs and energy pathways in the body (called meridians) that regulate the flow of electrical energy to all systems. Unlike acupuncture, acupressure can be used safely by anyone, with only the hands as equipment.
ACUPRESSURE FOR EMOTIONAL HEALING offers a comprehensive A-Z guide to emotional ailments (from abandonment to worry and obsessive thinking), with fully-illustrated instruction on dozens of precise acupressure point locations and how to activate them, combined with yogic breathing, stretching, and movement routines. Case histories from the authors practice further illuminate each condition and the path to emotional balance and healing. Most routines can be used independently for self-care and on-the-spot relief. There are also sections on how to use the techniques to help others, with appropriate safeguards.

And provide new ways to open and renew your spirit.

May this book make emotional healing accessible,
Given the immense stress in the world.

Along with slow, deep breathing,
Emotional healing is within your reach,
Governed by the life force that flows through the points.

T his book presents acupressure points and techniques for treating a comprehensive range of emotional complaints and stress-related problems. The problems treated are organized alphabetically to make it easy for you to find a specific imbalance. Before turning to the chapter on a particular problem, however, we recommend that you at least read Chapters 1 and 3 to gain a knowledgeable foundation for treating yourself and for using acupressure safely and effectively.

Each chapter topic is self-contained, so you can skip around using the table of contents, the Quick Reference Guide on page 51, or the index. In each chapter you will find an introduction to the causes and issues related to the emotional complaint, a short story of how we applied acupressure for healing, positive affirmations, point descriptions with anatomical line drawings for determining the location and benefits, quick tips or miniroutines to use anywhere, and lastly, a self-care routine with step-by-step instructions for how to use the points.

Acupressure enables you to participate actively in your own healing. At the same time, however, you should continue to see your doctor or therapist for examinations, advice, and treatment. This book is not intended as a substitute for medical advice, but it can complement your medical care by enabling you to take a vital role in getting and staying well.

We hope that this book will lead you to a new dimension of well-beingnot only to improve your health but to open the spirit within your heart and expand the awareness of your own healing energy. Simply using your hands to empower yourselfanytime, anywhereis a tremendous blessing.

A BOUT THE A UTHORS

In the 1970s I (Michael Gach) studied Gestalt therapy and integrated its here-and-now techniques in my acupressure sessions with remarkable effectiveness. I discovered later that my unique way of guiding clients was similar to Focusing, a clinical approach for guiding clients into their inner awareness, formulated by Eugene Gendlin, PhD. As acupressure points are held, I coach a person to relax and breathe deeply to heighten their inner awareness. I have found that this process effectively releases unfinished emotional or traumatic experiences that have been stored within the body. As the acupressure points open, energy flowsawakening transformational healing experiences.

After twenty years of using acupressure for emotional balancing, I met Beth Henning in one of my acupressure trainings. Her written case studies assigned in the training had profound depth and vivid detail, demonstrating her understanding and skill in the emotional healing process. While cocreating this book with me, she has maintained a full-time acupressure practice combining breathwork, Reiki, and shamanism. Although we share many core beliefs and practices, we also incorporate different styles of healing methods. I believe our collaboration adds great depth to the scope and effectiveness of this book.

Michael Reed Gach, DiplABT, PhD

I (Beth Henning) have been an alternative health clinician for twenty years, having studied with a variety of healers and spiritual teachers. My private practice consists of individuals who have exhausted mainstream health care or who cannot participate due to cost or personal preference.

Pain from a car accident in the late 1980s forced me to seek body-oriented therapies. All the valuable healings I had given others did not prepare me for handling my own debilitating chronic pain. As a single parent in private practice, I began a deep healing journey. During my recovery I studied, apprenticed, and cotaught with Michael Gach. Students found that our collaboration bridged many different psychological and spiritual aspects of natural healing. Acupressure changed my life and the direction of my private practice.

I continue to have incredible success teaching self-acupressure for home-care support. I have found no other natural healing method as powerful for balancing emotions and restoring health. I feel honored to share my experience and clinical knowledge as a partner on this inspiring project.
