Introduction
How many adults in the United States have ADHD, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder?
If you were like most psychiatrists and doctors in the year 1990, youd have answered, almost none. The condition is typically characterized by hyperactivity, which most adults dont have. And even without hyperactivity, just ADD, there simply isnt that much of it in adults.
They were horribly wrong. According to the World Health Organization and many other respected medical authorities, about 5% of adults in the United States have ADHD.
Thats 11,000,000 people.
Because we didnt believe ADHD existed in adults, not very many are getting treatment. Of those eleven million, in the past year, only one million got some form of treatment for ADHD.
This is a gigantic public health failure. Untreated ADHD causes real problems. Having it means youre twice as likely to get a divorce. You have an up to 50% chance of developing serious depression or anxiety. Youre more likely to get your license suspended or revoked.
All this and you would have had no idea why.
Why it was so hard for you to pay attention to small details, to sit still, to stay focused on one thing. To enjoy a long conversation or stay at the dinner table after eating. Those and more than 90 other areas can be extremely challenging for people with ADHD.
The worst part? We now can show almost conclusively that ADHD is a physical condition. The evidence is extremely strong and only growing. We can now, for instance, measure your brain waves and tell you with about 90% accuracy if you have ADHD or not.
By the time you finish reading this guide, you will know what adult ADHD looks like, what to do if you think you might have it, and a good deal about how it is treated.
This is a no-nonsense booklet. It was written to be as short as possible while being scientifically accurate and providing comprehensive information. You can print it and read it while taking the bus to work, for instance.
