Introduction
LET CHIA CHANGE YOUR LIFE
vitality nounplural vitalities
1. exuberant physical strength and mental vigor
2. capacity for the continuation of a meaningful and purposeful existence
3. power to live and grow
4. vital force
I s there anyone who doesnt hunger for every single thing on that list? Physical strength, mental vigor, a meaningful and purposeful existence, the power to live and grow, vital force Wow! Thats a roster of just about everything sorely missing in most of our busy modern lives. Yet vitality and all that defines it isnt as elusive as it might seem. Even if you feel lacking in vitality right now, believe me, theres a vibrant, joyous person living inside you! You just need the right tools to bring it outand chia is here to help.
When some people think about vitality, they think about having the energy to do more, and thats certainly a part of it. But when I think about vitality, I think about how it doesnt allow you to just do moreit allows you to be more. People with vitality are enthusiastic, passionate, and authentic. Theyre resilient in the face of lifes ups and downs and filled with gratitude for the things, both big and small, that enrich their lives. Perhaps most notably, people with vitality are aligned with their souls purpose. Theyve discovered what really matters to them and are living life accordingly. No wonder they feel so alive!
But can I get all that from a seed smaller than a freckle? Youd be right to be skeptical; when I first heard about the magic of chia, I was, too. It wasnt long, though, before I realized how well chia delivers on its promiseits so much more than a nutrient-dense superfood. Seed by seed, this little powerhouse leads you down the path to vitality, giving you the energy and strength to lead a more beautiful and more dynamic life. Some foods simply feed the body, but chia also feeds the soul.
When you look at all thats packed into a single tablespoon of chia seeds, its not hard to understand why theres a chia renaissance going on. Omega-3s! Fiber! Protein! Calcium! Iron! Antioxidants! And thats just a partial list. Gram for gram, there really isnt anything like chia: 70 percent more protein than soybeans, 25 percent more fiber than flaxseed, 600 percent more calcium than milk, and 30 percent more antioxidants than blueberries. Chias omega-3 content alonethe highest of any vegetarian sourceprovides reason to celebrate. These essential fatty acids are known to protect the heart, help prevent cancer, reduce inflammation, diminish the symptoms of autoimmune disorders, and possibly even guard against Alzheimers disease and depression. And you get all that for a mere 60 to 68 calories per tablespoon (calories vary depending on whos doing the calculations, but this is the general range). Its as if nature decided to develop its own wellness supplementall the nutrients known to help fight disease and boost vigor conveniently packed into a small package, there for the taking.
SEEDS OF WISDOM
There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening, that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique.

When I talk about Mamma Chia, the chia-based food and beverage company I founded in 2009 and still run today, people sometimes ask if we use the same seeds that give Chia Pets their fluffy green hair, and they always smile when they learn that there is indeed a connection. Thanks to the Chia Pet folks, most people already have a good feeling about chia, and they know how to pronounce it! (Chia has thus escaped the fate of the poor acai [ ah-sigh-ee ] berry, which most people can never quite wrap their tongues around.) Until recently, though, most people had never used, let alone heard about using, chia as a food. But chia as a source of nutrition isnt so much a discovery as a rediscovery. Hundreds of years before we had laboratory analyses to provide us with chias nutritional stats, the Aztecs had detected its unrivaled restorative powers. They used chia for sustenance as well as for medicine and endurance. Aztec warriors would toss back a few spoonfuls of chia every few hours to give them the energy for battle and other demanding physical tasks. Even now, many runners are enamored of chia. The Tarahumara Indians, a native people of Mexico known for their long-distance running (theyll run for days, covering as much as two hundred miles), still use the seeds to power their marathon feats of athleticism.
Chias invigorating health benefits make it the perfect catalyst for change. If you feel as if youre pedaling as fast as you can only to have the life you want elude you, this wellspring of vitality can help. It may seem like a stretchhow can a mere seed put you on the road to a more spirited and exuberant life?but trust me, chias like a shot in the arm. It wakes you up, giving you the mental clarity and physical energy you need to pursue your souls purpose: a life with meaning, connection, and authenticity. Thats the very definition of vitality!
At least thats my definition of vitality. These days, society seems to suggest that vitality is the ability to juggle a million things at once without flagging, to be endlessly productive, to get it all inthe clean diet, the five workouts a week, the organic garden in the backyardand to just go, go, go, as abuzz as a hummingbird. Id like to suggest that thats a by-product of too much coffee, not a definition of vitality. I believe it is time to drop the notion that its easy to live a perfectly balanced life. Im all for striving for balance, but striving for perfection has a way of undercutting the accomplishments we do achieve. In the pursuit of perfection, theres little room for being kind or forgiving of oneself, both essential to creating a vibrant, fulfilling life.
