This book was completed in the face of adversity. Beyond the problem of advancing age, I endured complications following surgery (July, 2009), requiring months of hospitalization and therapy. There was a period in which no work was possible, and I believed that I could never complete the project. In time, with the help of others, I was able to return to the task. My friend and gifted physician, Dr. Robert H. Kelly, guided me back to health. Research assistanceincluding mundane tasks like carrying bookswas provided by a promising young scholar, Coleman A. Baker, PhD; some of his work was supported by a TCU Faculty Emeritus Grant. Institutional support was supplied by Brite Divinity School and the Mary Couts Burnett Library at Texas Christian Universityespecially the Circulation and Interlibrary Loan Departments. Friends and colleagues provided encouragement. For the last few years, I have enjoyed weekly lunch with my successor at Brite, M. Eugene Boring. Virtually everything in the book has been discussed with Gene, and benefited from his insight. From time to time, we are joined by Victor Paul Furnish who travels from Dallas. Both Gene and Vic read the manuscript and suggested revisions which have significantly improved the final product. Helpful suggestions were also made by my long-time friend and colleague, James O. Duke, who read the manuscript with great care. This book is dedicated to two women who have been important for my life: my wife, Shirley, and my daughter, Lisa.
