As I write this foreword, Im sitting next to a stranger on a cross-country flight. My seatmate and I have exchanged a few formalities but nothing more. In our continuing silence, I reread more of the extraordinary stories Brandon has been able to capture and curate in this book. The more I read, the more I want to take action, like Brandon, and invite this woman next to mewhom I will likely never see againto share her story with me. I want to ignore what my mother told me many times growing up, to never talk to strangers, and learn more about who she is. When I was a little girl I remember sitting in the backseat of my mothers car staring out into the LA traffic looking into the cars of the people passing by and wondering what their stories were, who were these strangers? Years ago, I started my own unlikely art project, inviting strangers to mail me their secret anonymously on a postcard.

I believe my project, PostSecret, and the Strangers Project are part of a larger tradition of people who value the everyday experiences of ordinary peopleincluding Studs Terkel, who painstakingly collected oral histories from common folk through the second half of the last century, up to Brandon Stantons daily street portraits of Humans of New York. When I asked Brandon to tell me the goal of the Strangers Project he said I - photo 3 When I asked Brandon to tell me the goal of the Strangers Project, he said, I wanted to create a physical space that would invite people to be curious and exploratorya space that would create pathways and a structure in which people would open up organically. I didnt want to use prompts like, Tell me your favorite memoryI thought it would be far more interesting to see what we share when given a blank canvas and an invitation to be present. By taking this organic approach, Brandon discovered raw authenticity and a wide diversity of experience, which also led to some surprises. What I didnt expect from this book was to be so inspired Before our flight - photo 4 What I didnt expect from this book was to be so inspired. Before our flight touched down, I found the courage to talk to the stranger the world had randomly placed next to me.

She opened up and described her most meaningful travel experience, which involved her son, a starlit sky, and families of sea turtles. To quote Brandon, I believe that everyone has a story worth sharing; we are just waiting for someone to listen.
