I believe my project, PostSecret, and the Strangers Project are part of a larger tradition of people who value the everyday experiences of ordinary peopleincluding Studs Terkel, who painstakingly collected oral histories from common folk through the second half of the last century, up to Brandon Stantons daily street portraits of Humans of New York. 
When I asked Brandon to tell me the goal of the Strangers Project, he said, I wanted to create a physical space that would invite people to be curious and exploratorya space that would create pathways and a structure in which people would open up organically. I didnt want to use prompts like, Tell me your favorite memoryI thought it would be far more interesting to see what we share when given a blank canvas and an invitation to be present. By taking this organic approach, Brandon discovered raw authenticity and a wide diversity of experience, which also led to some surprises. 
What I didnt expect from this book was to be so inspired. Before our flight touched down, I found the courage to talk to the stranger the world had randomly placed next to me.
