Shad Helmstetter, author of What to saywhen you talk to yourself gives the following analogy. Imagine ourmind to be a house that is filled with old useless furniture.(negative thoughts) You take out the old furniture and place it outon the yard. You go back inside pleased that you have thrown yourold no-good furniture outside and the house is cleaned up now.
However once you are inside the house, yousee how empty everything feels. Nature abhors a vacuum. If you donot have new furniture to replace the old one, you are in danger ofgoing out to the yard and bringing the old furniture back in.
In other words, if you do not have positivethoughts to replace the negative thoughts that you threw away,those negative thoughts will come home to roost. This is whereaffirmations play their part. Positive affirmations replace yourold tired thoughts with new powerful thoughts.

For Affirmations to work, they have tofulfill 4 critical criteria:
1. Affirmations should be in the presenttense
Ex. If you tell yourself, I will earnmoney, it tells your subconscious that you currently have no moneyand are struggling to earn. Also, the statement is in the futuretense. Your subconscious only understands things in the presenttense.
Instead you must say, Money is easy toearn, and it comes to me easily, quickly and generously. It willgive your subconscious a picture that money is here for the taking.And your subconscious will direct your conscious to work as per thenew picture.
2. Affirmations should be stated in thepositive
Ever heard of those so called New Yearresolutions like I will lose weight, I will stop smoking, etc.The problem with those statements is that you attract what you donot want. The moment you say that you will lose weight, the picturebeing sent to your subconscious is that of your big, bulky weight.When you decide to quit smoking, your mind gets an image of yousmoking. You feel the urge to smoke, and you feel guilty when yousmoke.
Instead tell yourself: I keep my bodypure. This gives an image to your mind that your body is a templethat must be kept clean. It should be nurtured with nutritious foodand daily exercise.
3. Affirmations should be spoken aloud orlistened to
Affirmations shouldnt just be read, itshould be spoken aloud or heard. There is something very powerfulabout listening to affirmations. When the mind receives auralinputs, the spoken words go deep into your subconscious.
Spoken affirmations generate positivechemicals inside your brain. They charge up your persona and makeyou feel like a new person. You should look to speak aloud asregularly as possible.
On some days, you may not get a chance toread the affirmations. For this, I have a simple solution. I havecreated an affirmations audio which you can listen to when youdont have time to read. 4. Affirmations should be repeated daily
You bathe your body daily. When was the lasttime you bathed your mind?
Do you realize that your mind needscleansing from time to time? Your old negative thoughts clog upyour thought process, and they need to be regularly removed bycleaning your mind with positive affirmations. If you are stuck, itis a result of your inner critic that has clamped you down. Itstime to break free from the shackles.
I listen to Affirmations when I wake up,when I am bathing and when I commute. And I recommend that youspeak or listen to Affirmations at least once daily. I have beenlistening to Affirmations regularly for many years now. It took mea year of regular listening before I was able to come out of theshell that was holding me back. Your mileage may vary.
If you think a year is a long time forAffirmations to work, you are thinking about Affirmations in anincorrect way. Affirmations should be a daily habit. Think about itthis way: If your friend comes up and tells you that he triedbathing for a year and is thinking of giving up because his body isstill getting dirty every day, what would you tell him? You wouldthink that your friend is crazy. When you are out in the worlddoing your regular stuff, you tend to get dirty. I would guess youwould tell your friend to keep bathing daily.
Similarly, our mind is exposed to variousnegativities every day. These negativities dirty our mind. Andhence we need to clean our mind every day. We need to affirm thebeauty and power of our own selves, so that we dont getoverwhelmed by negativities around us. Affirmations is to our mind,what bathing is to our body.
These are the four critical components ofAffirmations. There is one more component outside of Affirmationsthat can make or break everything. And that is Massive Action.
Affirmations in themselves are not enough toreach your Goals. You need to take Massive Action. Whatever you areaffirming, you need to follow up with concrete action stepsimmediately. Affirmations with Action bring aboutManifestation.
Affirmations can be addressed in the firstperson I am or it can be addressed to the self in the thirdperson You are. I have tried both and our mind accepts both withsimilar results. The affirmations in this book are delivered in thethird person.
