After the prediction that the apocalypse would begin on May 21, 2011, failed to come true, some came to believe that the time of salvation had ended. By delving deep into the words of the Bible, including the original languages, this study shows through Scripture why the Biblical calendar that yielded the false prediction of the end of the world should never be trusted and that Jesus still saves.

Foreword
HaroldCampings Final Doctrinal Stance

Thefollowing Bible study makes many references to the late Harold E.Camping, former president and general manager of Family Stations,Inc., particularly Mr. Campings Biblical timeline of history. Letthe record show that although Mr. Camping promoted the notion ofdate setting for many years and even continued to do so for a shorttime after the uneventful passing of May 21, 2011, his position didchange. In the end, Mr. Camping publicly changed his stance, stating that he had come to understand that Jesus was speakingplainly when He stated that no one knows the day or the hour of Hisreturn. Further, Mr. Campings stance regarding salvation alsoultimately changed. While he first hinted that he believed that theday of salvation ended on May 21, 2011, he later concededotherwise. Thanks be to God for granting Mr. Camping repentance tothe acknowledging of the truth.

This study is not intended to slander, berate, or belittle Mr. Camping in any way. Its purpose is to offerScriptural support for the following:

  • The time of the return of Christ is entirelyunknown to anyone but God the Father.

  • A trustworthy Biblical timeline of historyis impossible.

  • The teaching that the day of salvation isover, based on the Biblical timeline that Mr. Camping taught andultimately refuted, is contrary to the Bible.

As such, the following exposition might seemfoolish, superfluous, or even offensive to some readers. The readermust consider the quoted Scriptures and to pray for the wisdom andguidance of the Holy Spirit regarding these and any other parts ofGods Word.

About the Underlined and Italicized Text

This study cites and quotes passages from the Authorized King JamesVersion of the Bible, revised in 1769. Words that appear initalics dont appear in the original Greek and Hebrew textof the Bible as inspired by God. They were supplied by thetranslators for ease of reading and better grammatical flow inEnglish.

Words that appear in underlined text refer to the underlying Greek NewTestament text under discussion in the section in which they arefound. For example, the underlined phrase myFather only represents the Greek phrase pathr mou monos. This study employs this method to indicate to the reader where inthe English translation the Greek text under discussion appears, asopposed to displaying actual Greek text, which some might findoff-putting.

About the Greek Words

This studyuses English letters to write Greek words. The Greek language usesan alphabet different from that of the English language. Theprocess of representing the phonemes of one alphabet using thecharacters of another is known as transliteration. This studyendeavors to follow the Greek-to-English transliteration rulesfound at http://www.classicalmyth.com/alphabet.html .If you wish to follow the Greek exegesis of this study using thesame tools as the author, the Greek text referenced is taken fromthe InterlinearGreek New Testament module of the OnlineBible software.

Part 1: The Prophesy Failure ExplainedAway
The Death of an Idol

When May 21, 2011, came and went without therapture of Christians and the destruction of the world predicted bythe late Harold Camping, the defenders of this date didnt let itgo. They continue to assert that May 21, 2011, still holds somekind of Biblical significance. This is because it fell on theseventeenth day of the second month of the Hebrew calendar on whatthe May 21 defenders believe to be the seven thousandth anniversaryof Noahs flood.

In the six hundredth year ofNoahs life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up,and the windows of heaven were opened. (Genesis 7:11 KJV)

For yet seven days, and I willcause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; andevery living substance that I have made will I destroy from off theface of the earth. (Genesis 7:4 KJV)

But, beloved, be not ignorant ofthis one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousandyears, and a thousand years as one day. (2 Peter 3:8 KJV)

The May 21 defenders have calculated theyear of Noahs flood to be 4990 BC. Seven thousand years laterwould be 2011 AD. If this calculation is accurate, then the worldhas survived passed the seven thousandth anniversary of Noahsflood as of this writing. This study will show that there is reasonto distrust this calculation and subsequently cast doubt on theBiblical significance of May 21, 2011 and any and all teachingsbased on it.

Noahs flood is significant because its ahistorical parable pointing to the destruction of the world. Ateaching that surfaced is that May 21 was the day that the door ofNoahs ark was spiritually shut and that the possibility ofsalvation for anyone who has not yet been saved has ended. Thisstudy will show why that teaching is not true.

Where Math and Science Become a Lie

When therapture didnt occur on May 21, 2011, there was a great deal ofintense emotion at work among those who had believed it beyond ashadow of a doubt. Some have continued to hold on to the date inquestion as Biblically significant. This is because of themathematical calculations put forth chiefly by the late HaroldCamping of Family Stations, Inc. These calculations make sense froma logical and scientific standpoint and are mathematicallyverifiable.

The problem with the math and the science isnot their preciseness. The issue that some seem unwilling to heedis that some of the information used to complete the calendarincludes secular records. In order to extrapolate a completetimeline, its necessary to bridge the Old Testament calendar withchronological information found in the New Testament and figure outwhat the equivalent date is in the present-day calendar system.

Now in the fifteenth year of thereign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philiptetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysaniasthe tetrarch of Abilene, (Luke 3:1 KJV)

The problem is that we still dont reallyknow when the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar was.The Bible gives us know frame of reference on which to determinethat. In order to try to answer this question, we must figure outthe exact year in the present day Gregorian calendar on which thefifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar fell. The Biblegives us no help with this. We must look to extra-Biblical sourcesof information. This ought to be enough to put the brakes on thecalendar for everyone, but it isnt.

The Bible Is Its Own Interpreter

Knowing this first, that no prophecy of thescripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy camenot in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake asthey were moved by the Holy Ghost. (2 Peter 1:20-21KJV)

If we want to define anything in the Bible,we must look nowhere else. All that God wants us to know from theBible is defined and developed only in the Bible. Looking at anyoutside source whatsoever opens us up to error because it comesfrom man and not from God.
