Mental Combat: How You Can Develop a Stronger Brain (And Body)
Welcome to Mental Combat, your guide to unlocking the power of your mind and body through simple, proven, psychological techniques that you can use right now.
Whether you are training in a specific style like martial arts, you are an overall fitness and sports enthusiast, or you just want to learn quick tricks to boost confidence and motivation at home or in the office, Mental Combat will provide easy, step-by-step tactics for all of these and more.
The tips and tricks contained within this book have been collected from a variety of expert sources, including top performance coaches, martial arts instructors and a variety of sports psychologists. In compiling this book, I wanted to make sure that the techniques described were not merely hearsay or anecdotes passed from person to person but quantifiable techniques demonstrated, through scientific study, to amplify physical and mental ability.
The other important side of mental prowess, of course, is its application beyond sports or martial arts. We go through our daily existence often encountering adversity. Even within the relatively low-conflict environment of an office, we will often encounter others who seek to take opposition or challenge authority in our daily jobs. The right application of mental agility, using specific techniques and tricks, can give you a real edge in your confidence and your demeanor. This will not only help you in your 9-5, but will also give you better prospects in communicating with others, navigating your love life, and finding success on a daily basis.
Over the years, I have been lucky enough to train in a variety of martial arts and fitness styles all around the world, Ive written a couple of bestsellers and Ive learned from some of the best coaches and instructors around. One of the enduring lessons Ive learned is that physical performance in life is not limited to the muscles and bones of your body. Indeed many of the top performers are physically fit, but they really dominate their opponents from a psychological standpoint. It is these tactics that I want to pass on to you today, so I can help you get the most from your amazing brain.
The Mental Combat Secret (and why managing conflict is so important)
Life is full of conflict, whether you realize it or not.
We are surrounded by people in similar positions, all reaching for the same goals as us. We seek well-paying jobs, nice houses, good health and safety for our families etc. With the worlds population exploding to dangerous levels, its no surprise then that we find ourselves having to fight to succeed. This is especially true in sports and combat arts where direct competition is the measure of success.
How you manage this conflict is the key to real success.
In nature an animal typically has two responses: fight or flight. But as humans, we are quite unique in the complexity of our thoughts. This works both for and against us.
Yes, we have developed the incredible intelligence needed to split the atom, examine the human gene code and build worldwide communication networks, but all of this is at the expense of the most powerful and primal instincts of mental strength that our ancestors possessed.
Thousands of years ago, early humans would be faced with death, violence, and threats at every turn. It was a short and dangerous life, but it bred an intrinsic ability to focus on the now, get the job done and go on living.
Today conflict is watered down into so many different forms that the mind has to adapt. Consider the nerves before a sports competition, the pressure before an interview or the way we handle a rival at work or the gym.
We overthink everything. It all seems like life and deaththough ironically nothing is. Our brains are essentially working overtime to filter out all the noise around us. Because of this, we have lost touch with the mindfulness that gives us power.
Mental Combat is centered on the idea of managing each conflict and overcoming each challenge through strength of mind and bringing out your inner fighter. This does not involve aggression or anger but simple, intelligent techniques based on Sports Psychology that can switch on some of the confidence, motivation, and drive that we all have inside.
I personally come from a martial arts and fitness background, so Im well aware of the benefits of mental preparation prior to competitions, grading and tough physical challenges. I have seen extremely talented Black Belts fall to pieces under the pressure of an audience. Ive also seen equally nervous youngsters suddenly discover their inner confidence when its needed and then go on to shine.
Mental Combat is about recognizing the conflict in life, embracing the fact that it is all around us, and using the best tools available to strengthen your mind and, in turn, your body. Mental Combat is not just for sports. Indeed, the concept is useful in overcoming any struggle or stressful scenario we encounter in life.
So while the athletes, martial artists and sports competitors may find the most benefit from this guide, anyone, from any lifestyle, will be able to use the simple tricks and techniques to improve confidence, overcome stressful situations and unlock the power of their mind.
With that in mind, lets take a look at the steps to take.
